When does being "open-minded" become a problem?

Asked by Demosthenes (14935points) August 8th, 2021

At what point does a person become too open-minded, if such a thing is even possible? Where do you draw the line between being open to new ideas and being so open that you become unable to determine what ideas are good or bad?

Well if you’re open minded to having sex with kids its a problem.

My thinking is that everyone has some personal guidelines (not limits) on what they consider to be ‘normal’ or ‘smart’ or something similar.

Too open minded suggests that a person doesn’t have those personal ideas or tenets, and just waves like weeds in the wind. If you don’t have some sort of a measuring stick, how can you evalulate… anything…?

When it is open at both ends.

Probably when it’s apparent a specific open minded perspective might result in a negative outcome.

When it becomes destructive to you individually or to society.

It’s a problem when most of everyone else isn’t.

There’s basically nothing about the trait that’s at all negative, and it’s generally associated with creativity and intelligence.

When you begin to doubt yourself.

There’s a difference between being open minded and gullible. An open minded person is willing to consider any argument or point of view in good faith. They are not obligated to agree with it. I don’t see a downside.

It’s a problem when you get so wishy washy you can’t take any kind of stand.

When your girlfriend says no to your suggestion to invite her colleague for a threesome.

@rebbel Needs a more open-minded girlfriend in that scenario.

It is a problem when it takes a bad direction, as demonstrated by the two responses above.

In everything there is a good direction, and a bad direction. Being open minded can go to the end of the Earth, if in the right direction. If you try to reach the end of the flat Earth, you have gone the wrong direction, and might fall off.

Because close minded people only believe what they believe and aren’t good at figuring things out. Open minded people observe and by observing the mind can figure things out that others wouldn’t
