What is your experience with tooth extractions?

Asked by anniereborn (15511points) September 30th, 2021

I had a quarter of my biggest molar crack off a week ago. I developed a tongue ulcer from it. Yesterday I had the damn thing pulled as there was no hope of saving it. I have been in more pain than i have ever felt in my life. My dentist prescribed me Tylenol 3 with Codeine. My mouth still feels like it is on fire half the time. I think a lot of that is from the tongue ulcer. I know I could call my dentist but it’s hard to talk. I’m looking for stories of similar things and how long the pain lasted and what you did. Please help!

Better talk to your dentist. I had a root canal that caused a lot of pain. Turns out it was botched. Luckily it was due to internal irritation and not infection.

They should also have given you an antibiotic to address any infection, in addition to the painkiller.

Yeah – it would seem that maybe you need to be on an antibiotic as well if it is the ulcer that is causing a lot of the pain.

I had a tooth extracted a few years ago and it seems that it was about three days that I felt pretty punk but it wasn’t the worst pain I ever felt.

Tlak to the dentist and feel better!

I just called the dentist. I couldn’t take it any more and I was worried. I am going to see her in an hour.

My experience was better than I feared. I had four impacted wisdom teeth extracted at once. I got full anesthesia, which made that a happy fluffy warm cloud experience. Recovery was not so bad for me… I was mostly in bed for a few days, had to change swabs and gauze, and brought soup and so on. I was a bit swollen but not in much pain at all. I think I was given Tylenol with codeine, which I didn’t need to use much of.

I went to the dentist. Thank goodness she got me in.
It was two huge cuts on my tongue from the sharp edges of the neighbor of the extracted tooth. From which I already had a cut for a week. She smoothed down the tooth. I can tell already it will help a lot.

Yikes, yes get it checked.
Honestly, my guy is so skilled, I just got a little laughing gas and he was done.
After 2–3 days I barely noticed and I NEVER take pain pills, they make me very sick.

anniereborn's avatar

@KNOWITALL It took an hour to drill, crack and pull this thing out. If I didn’t have the pain pills, I would have offed myself

KNOWITALL's avatar

@anniereborn Oh wow, sounds like my wisdom teeth. I was fully sedated for that business. Must have been your lowers? I hear they are harder to get out.

My wisdom teeth oral surgeon almost gave me a jokers smile, cut both sides of my mouth and I think that bothered me more than the rest.

anniereborn's avatar

@KNOWITALL Yes it was the molar right next to where a wisdom tooth would be. And also on the lower jaw. That’s terrible about your mouth!

I had three teeth extracted when I was a schoolboy. The dentist doing the extractions discovered that my teeth have unusually long roots and he had trouble pulling them out. He had to administer extra gas and when I came round, I felt groggy and horribly sick. The smell of rubber makes me feel sick to this day, 60 years later, but there wasn’t much pain.

I had four small molars pulled when i was 14 for braces. That barely hurt at all.

I I have had several extractions. if it’s done right, all goes well. you will want to avoid drinking through a straw. Avoid Hot drinks, heavy exercise, and hot baths or showers. all of those can increase the pressure in your head area, and cause more pain.

I have been through an incredible amount of dental trauma- more than most people. The worst 2 experiences were because I was dealing with dentists who had no business anywhere close to a dental clinic!

Unfortunately, corruption and incompetence in the dental field is widespread.

The good news is, I am really really careful now about who looks in my mouth, and I research the heck out of them!

My dentist communicatesto me through email. Could yousend them an email?

snowberry's avatar

A good dentist should make sure somebody contacts you the next day or so to make sure things are OK. Have they?

janbb's avatar

@snowberry Read her posts. She went back to the dentist and get some relief.

RocketGuy's avatar

@snowberry – yeah, the dentist who botched my root canal was a cosmetic dentist. He insisted on replacing my perfectly good amalgam fillings with color-matched composite. He replaced and perfectly color matched several fillings, but botched a crown (where he thought the amalgam was too deep for just a composite filling). That caused pain and swelling, so he attempted a root canal (which he botched too). That caused more pain and swelling. I reported him to the dental board. In deliberations, I overhead one member say: “I hate when they do this.” I got $400 out of this – yay.

This horrible story continues. She had put some topical numbing on my wound when she smoothed out my other tooth. So, I thought I was feeling better. That wore off. So last night I was back in terrible pain again. I called my dentist today to tell them and they called me in a refill of my pain meds. I took a double dose over two hours ago and it has not helped at all. In fact I feel worse. That could be from talking so much to the dentist and pharmacy with my tongue sores. My whole left side of my face is on fire. And now they are closed until Monday ! FUCK!
Also….I don’t have much choice in dentists with my state aid (Medicaid).

@anniereborn Maybe you can get a walk-in emergency clinic or your regular doctor to prescribe a stronger narcotic? I couldn’t tolerate Narcan with my broken ankle but Percocet was a big help.

anniereborn's avatar

I can’t believe I have no one that will go with me to the ER. I am losing my shit here!

chyna's avatar

Oh damn @anniereborn. If I lived near you, I would take you.

janbb's avatar

Can you get to an walk-in emergency place? That will be less traumatic than the ER. It does sound like there’s an infection in there perhaps.

On two occasions when I have visited my mother I have had toothache and I have visited the Emergency Dentist.

On both occasions I was prescribed penicillin and I was able to have the work done by my own dentist.

On the first occasion, the tooth was very loose and it was extracted. It was later replaced with an implant.

On the second occasion, the second emergency dentist advised that the tooth was removed. I said that I wanted to keep the tooth and that I wanted a prescription for penicillin.

My dentist is treating this tooth at the moment. He has given me an emergency filling after doing some root work.

Later he will give me a crown.

It was not necessary to extract the tooth. Because of Covid, dentistry is under a lot of pressure at the moment.

There is sometimes an assumption that you cannot afford more expensive treatments.

I would prefer to be treated on the NHS but I will pay if necessary.
