Can you explain to me, in easy to understand terms how a fake elector can vote?

Asked by chyna (51327points) July 19th, 2023 from iPhone

I know what an electorate vote is and how it’s supposed to work. But in light of Michigan charging 16 “false electors” I don’t understand where the real electors were. Were they kidnapped, told to go to the wrong place, stopped to play with puppies?
I mean, wouldn’t someone realize there were 32 people there to cast their votes instead of 16?

They were self proclaimed “alternative” electors, that were part of a scheme to get Pence to disregard the actual electors and count them instead.
One of the ways in which the Orangutan attempted to commit actual election fraud, longside pressuring state governors to “find” more votes for him, and his slew of frivolous lawsuits, for which his “Kraken” lawyers got sanctioned.

They never got to vote. How the Republicans can still support this outrageous attempt at a power grab is totally beyond me.

Just like the rioters on January 6th.

What I read, was that the plan was to say that when two sets of electors appeared, Pence would declare the vote in Michigan (and the other states where this was also happening) to be contested, and since Pence was overseeing the process, they had a plan for how to have that result in the uncontested total to favor Trump, so Pence could declare Trump the victor, and then they could lie/censor/bluster/covfefe/kill their way to a dictatorship.

The “fake” electors” were only supposed to create enough confusion that old 45 could have his way & claim victory. He assumed that his base would rise up to overthrow the government & the proud boys, oath keepers, & any of the others were supposed to keep his base riled up or lead them into battle assuming that they would blindly follow during the confusion. He also believed that the US military would support him over the country. His intent was to refuse to leave office & the “fakes” were his way to “get his way”. According to his BFF Roger Stone, they started planning this in June 2016…just in case it was needed.

One part of the the Republican effort to end our democracy is the assertion that state legislatures have total power in elections, and can appoint a states’ electors regardless of the people’s vote.

In 2020 numerous lawsuits pushing the idea, from Trump and his allies, were dismissed by courts around the US.

Last month the US Supreme Court rejected the argument, but only 6–3. Horrifyingly, three justices were on board.
