Do you use a top sheet?

Asked by gimmedat (3951points) November 16th, 2008 from iPhone

I always make my bed (and my kids’ beds) with a top sheet with the intention of using it. I never do. I kick it off (as do my kids) every night. I end up only using the comforter. Should I use a top sheet? Why?

I went for many years using only a comforter but recently started using a topsheet again, because it’s easier to wash the sheet than the king-sized duvet cover.

All the sheets I own aren’t very soft; I usually set my bed up with a bottom sheet, and a comfy throw blanket or thermal blanket on top of me. I also never make my bed.

In my experience, though, comforters are usually the part of the bed you only wash every couple months, whereas you want to wash the sheets every couple weeks. (Basically, what hearkat said.)

Yes, as a matter of fact I do use a top sheet.

@Azul: High thread count sheets are so worth it!

I use a top sheet. I know plenty of folks who only use a comforter, but I need a top sheet to be able to sleep well. I think it has a lot to do with how your mom/dad made your bed growing up.

I also overheat in bed very easily, so I often use only a top sheet.

Always, I actually put a flat sheet…then a down comforter…then another flat sheet…then the decorative comforter. Using the two flat sheets, and folding their egdges over each other keeps me from having to wash the down comforter so often (which is a pain in the arse!). I so agree with hearkat, high thread counts are wonderful and go a long way towards keeping you comfortable. You need not spend big $$ on them either. They can be found reasonably priced at Tuesday Morning, TJMaxx, Overstock, etc.

Absolutely. Sometimes it’s too warm for a comforter.

I generally do use a top sheet. My reasons involve dust mites.. they feed off body soils that accumulate in your bedding. If you don’t use a top sheet, you’ll want to wash your comforter with some frequency. I know way too much about dust mites, it freaks and grosses me out.. I will refrain from telling you what I know and doing the same to all of you. :)

I do now, but I have gone without on a number of occasions. Maybe you could get a duvet cover for your comforter, skip the top sheet altogether since you never end up using it, and just wash the duvet cover instead of the comforter.

I use a top sheet throughout the year. In the summer it’s usually enough to keep me comfy in the night. In the colder months I supplement with a knitted blanket I made myself a long time ago. Since it’s only one layer of knit wool, it’s not nearly as insulating as a comforter, so having the top sheet is a must-have.

I personally don’t like comforters, they’re too poofy for me. As well, I sleep with my partner who often overheats during the night, so a comforter would be way too warm for us.
