Anyone know someone who has had a divorce party?

Asked by freelancer79 (12points) October 3rd, 2007

I“m a writer and interested in writing a story on a new trend…now that divorce is so commonplace, women are having bachelorette-style divorce parties…outings with their girlfriends to celebrate being single again. has anyone attended such a party or know someone who has? Or know of any links to resources on this? Thanks.

Some of the strip clubs in Philly advertise divorce parties—it might be interesting to talk to them on their perspective. One of them is Show N Tel. http://www.showandtel.com/showbar.html

As a former divorce lawyer, I’ve been invited to a lot of “divorce parties,” which always sounded like a really good way for me to get in trouble with somebody. They do seem to be getting more popular, but I myself am not sure why you would want to celebrate something like a divorce in the manner most of these events seem to be done, unless it is just to distract yourself. While I can understand divorce being liberating for many, every single divorce I’ve ever done has made me sad for the time and effort that was put into an unsuccessful relationship. But that’s just me.

While a bit off topic, the WORST divorce party I ever heard of was a client of mine who made it very clear to every male, including me, in the courtroom, that as soon as her divorce was finalized that day, somebody was gonna get lucky in her divorce party. Somehow, her “ex” of a half hour or so managed to convince her to go across the street from the courthouse to the racetrack, spend some time gambling and drinking, then they went to the hotel a block away for “one more for old time’s sake.” Two months later, I get retained for the paternity case. Some people just don’t have much of a learning curve.

I thought that I’d read something about divorce parties semi-recently, and I just found the article in the NY Times in 2005 http://www.nytimes.com/2005/02/13/fashion/13DIVO.html

I knew a man who sent his ex-wife a black wedding cake on their every aniversary, post their divorce. Pity party in my mind.
