Ever feel demotivated to work in your company but you cannot quit ur job?

Asked by mea05key (1812points) February 20th, 2009

I started working almost 5 months ago. Things seem to go downhill ever since then. I have no solid job responsibility and often i am just doing administrative work like compilling stuffs, and laminating items. Although occasionally i get something that is related to my job scope, it only occupies like 30% of my time. I cannot seem to do much. Ive talked to my boss but my situation remains the same. On my part, i realise i am incapable of discussing in depth technical stuffs due to my lack of knowledge because i am new to all these. I am very demotivated and made quite a few silly mistakes here and there but nothing serious. I cannot quit this job yet as i am still searching for one. Worse still, people often pass by my desk looking at what i am doing and start saying bad things behind my back. I feel like resigning soon. What will you do to change this situation?

You implied that you do well with tasks ‘related to my job scope’. What is your job scope?
Not technical you said, but you mark engineering as an area of expertise, not communication I’m thinking, not administrative as you said. What is it that you are supposed to do in your current job?

I agree. Your question was very confusing – the info you provided seems contradictory (and the word you want is “unmotivated”. “Demotivate ” is what you do to others.) When does “quite a few silly mistakes” become serious?

Compiling stuff, if done carefully, can be useful to others, as a first step.

I am a project engineer. My responsibilities include dealing with customers and suppliers, creating key documentations, making purchases for the project and so on. The thing is I am not directly involve in any project. I only get to do bits here and there for people. And most of the time i am out of work. Imagine going to work having no work to do. It demotivates me. ( the job environment is demotivating me ). I spend 60% of my work time reading materials to improve my understanding but i begin to feel bored doing that. I have talked to my boss. Im not good at socialising you see so i rely alot on my involvement in projects with others so that i can built rship with my colleugues. I feel really insecure without any solid responsibilities. Any idea on what should i do in my situation?

I guess the next question is: Do you know what you want to be doing?

If so, is there anyone at your work who is doing what you want to be doing?
If so, establish a rapport with them, if you can, and see what happens.

Sort of a parallel thought: I tell my direct reports, “If you want to go up the next rung on the ladder, then you have to work like you are already on that rung.”

I guess something similar might apply.

Good question and advice Grisson. It makes me think now. I am not exactly sure what I want to do to be honest. I am the sort that try to like what I am doing , at least for now. Once I get a hang on the job and the motivation comes, I think i will stick to it.
