As an atheist, what do you believe without question?

Asked by evelyns_pet_zebra (12923points) March 14th, 2009

and with as much conviction as the religious-minded folks do of their gods? I believe that my wife loves me as much as she says she does, and that no matter how many times I am a complete douchebag, or behave in a selfish or stupid manner, she will continue to love me beyond measure. I will always do my best to please her and to make her happy, and that gives me great comfort, no matter what may come in the future. What about you?

I believe the purpose of life is to be the best you can be here and now, and not just because you are hoping for a reward at the end.

That yesterday is past, tomorrow is unguessable and unknowable, and that this moment is it. Elijah described well how to act while you are “Being here now.”

@zerocarbon – You must look starting at 7:04.

That I was born. That I will die. That there is much to do.

I believe that logic is the basis of something truly fundamental, and is not merely an arbitrary construct that resonates with the human mind. This is an article of faith, because one cannot use logic to prove that logic is ‘correct’, as this would be a proof that assumes the truth of its object; it can only be proven self-consistent. But I believe it because to do otherwise would trivialize my existence.

@cprevite And that in between birth and death you should do something productive with your time. This would also include masturbation, correct? :D

To quote Socrates: “All I know is I know nothing.”
I believe in everything and I believe in nothing.
The universe perpetually seeks balance, and thus I believe in Karma.
Change is constant.

I think there is a vast spectrum of certainty that religious people have about the existence of God, so I’m not sure exactly how to answer the question.

If you mean “what do you believe in with 0% doubt,” that’s a tough one. There’s a lot of stuff I believe with 99.999% certainty. But one of those things is Gödel’s incompleteness theorem, which makes absolute certainty kind of hard. :)

evelyns_pet_zebra's avatar

@Qingu a good knowledge of history makes the concept of “God being an all-knowing, all-loving deity” kind of hard to believe, yet thousands, if not millions do so easily enough. I would assume my phrasing of without question means with as much certainty as you can muster. I didn’t use percentage for that reason. Nothing is one hundred percent, except for the observation that, “thanks to the Internet, now there will always be at least one person that believes the exact opposite of you in whatever subject you want to bring up.” :D

elijahsuicide is spot on.

i believe there is no payoff at the end of life; the best experience you will ever enjoy will be what you make of your life before you die.

i also believe that in the space of a second before you die, you experience eternity of your own making in your mind.

we all die alone.
