nope. i don’t even consider it food.

Allie's avatar

It’s definitely not mexican food. It’s influenced by mexican food maybe, but their food itself is not mexican.

PupnTaco's avatar

No. I don’t know what it is.

TaoSan's avatar

No, that simple…

chyna's avatar

Not even.

cak's avatar

bwahahahahaha!!! No!

NaturalMineralWater's avatar

Irrevocably no. Taco Bell is American food based loosely on another culture, made cheaper, and mass producible. But we all knew that.

babygalll's avatar

After eating it…you better RUN to the border!

arturodiaz's avatar

Then why do people eat it? I dont get it. My stomach get sick each time Ive eaten there. (I have been there twice)

NaturalMineralWater's avatar

@arturodiaz Impatience. Sloth. Cinnamon sticks?

eponymoushipster's avatar

i heard that in mexico, they sell french fries at taco bell, because people think it’s american food.

i believe i read that in the Red Eye in Chicago

cak's avatar

@ arturodiaz – For the same reason people eat spam, boxed mac & cheese and ramen noodles – because they like it…or because it’s cheap.

chyna's avatar

@cak I’m going with “because it’s cheap.” Where else can you get enough to fill you up (at least for that moment) for under $4?

2late2be's avatar

Not Mexican at all, as a Mexican living in USA I have to say that there is NO place in the USA that can serve REAL Mexican food. Lots of “Mexican food” restaurants claim they do, but everyone that’s ever been in Mexico knows that it is a lie.

arturodiaz's avatar

@eponymoushipster There is Taco Bell in Mexico? I dont think they would work here. They sell a “Taco” at 99 cents, that would be about 14 Mexican Pesos. I can get real tacos for 3.50 pesos(or 25 cents of dollar) in almost every mildly trafficked street.

Besides why would people buy fake mexican food if they have real and cheaper on the corner?

Supacase's avatar

No, but it has some other mysterious appeal. I go there for a bean burrito once or twice a month.

arturodiaz's avatar

@2late2be absolutely true. I once went to San Diego to a mexican restaurant, the tortilla was weirdly yellow, the meat tasted like crap and the worst thing was that it cost me 20 dollars the whole meal.

@Supacase mysterious appeal? Explain yourself please :)

eponymoushipster's avatar

@arturodiaz i’m just going on what was in the article.

NaturalMineralWater's avatar

While it’s true that Americanized Mexican food is not real Mexican food, I don’t think it’s all garbage either. There are quite a few places I’ve eaten at in San Diego that were very good. And in some cases I preferred the Americanized version.

Supacase's avatar

@eponymoushipster Maybe not chains, but I think a small family business could. There was a place here that claimed to be authentic Mexican and I can say it was very, very different from any of the so-called Mexican restuarants I’ve been to. I would not personally know if it was truly authentic so I won’t swear to anything, but my friend from Mexico said it was the real deal.

@arturodiaz Mysterious? Well, I can’t say it’s exactly good food, but I seem to want it anyway. I ate a bean burrito with hot sauce, no onion, every single day on my lunchbreak during the last trimester of my pregnancy as everything else made me sick. I cannot logically explain any of that, but know it to be true. Mysterious.

cak's avatar

@chyna – When I was in college (today, it seems like a million years ago!), you could get tacos for 49 cents…talk about cheap dinner! ;)

chyna's avatar

@NaturalMineralWater I ate at
a mexican restaurant in San Diego that was nothing short of wonderful. Best mexican food ever. I have no doubt it was authentic.

casheroo's avatar

No, but I don’t care.

The_Compassionate_Heretic's avatar

It is accurate to call Taco Bell “Mexcian Food”. They’ve got tacos and burritos so you sort of have to acknowledge that they’re Mexican food albeit the bottom of the barrel for Mexican food. Now if you want actual good Mexican food you have to look up a good tacqueria in your Neighborhood.

NaturalMineralWater's avatar

@The_Compassionate_Heretic by category, but not categorically. xD English.. what a ruse.

arturodiaz's avatar

@NaturalMineralWater really, good mexican food in the US? where can I find it?. Im going to visit family this summer in San Diego.

NaturalMineralWater's avatar

@arturodiaz I didn’t say good mexican food. I said good americanized mexican food. xD

It has been over a decade since I’ve been to San Diego. I’m sorry, I don’t remember the place. But usually, I’ve found it to be true that a standalone (a restaurant that isn’t part of a chain) is far better…. hence the reason I forgot the name of the places.

mcbealer's avatar

hilarious question
but no
oh, and sadly, it’s the only “mexican” food some people have eaten

arturodiaz's avatar

@mcbealer Sadly… People dont know what they been missing. And BTW, is one of the cheapest kinds of foods too so thats extra kudos for mexican food :D

Also something interesting about mexican food is that we tend to mexicanize everything we see. Have you tried mexican hot dogs? They are something completely different. We put beans, guacamole, chorizo, onion, cheese, chile, champiƱones, and what not in them and bread is also different, is a sweet bread. They are delicious and 1.5 dollar a piece. We also put beaf and salsa chipotle to sushi, which is kind of weird but good stuff still. Mexican pizza is also really good.

mcbealer's avatar

Mmmmm… mexican pizza

Taco Bell sells something called a “Crunchwrap Supreme.” Trust me, this is not something you would find anywhere in Mexico, except possibly at a Taco Bell.

And Taco Bell is called that because it was founded by a guy named Glen Bell, who is not exactly Hispanic. Now it belongs to Yum! Foods which is headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky, yet another hotbed of Mexican culture.

It is not Mexican food.

The_Compassionate_Heretic's avatar

There’s a number of mexican food places in my area and they are very popular now with the family crowd. The parents never finish the re-fried beans and rice so along with those and chips, the kids essentially get to eat well for free.

Darwin's avatar

@arturodiaz – Anything with chorizo in it is perfectly acceptable to me.

Have you tried a Chicago hot dog? It is served on a poppy seed bun, with mustard, onion, sweet pickle relish (usually a dyed neon green variety called “Nuclear Relish”), a dill pickle spear, tomato wedges, pickled sport peppers, a dash of celery salt, and sometimes, but not always, cucumber slices.

eponymoushipster's avatar

i just think “gordita” is truth in advertising.

ems's avatar

I suppose it is Mexican influenced American cuisine. I’m not embarrassed to admit the crunchwrap supreme is an amazing invention. Here in the NW, Taco Bell might be more popular than McDonalds or Burger King.

knitfroggy's avatar

Anything with a name like Bell Beefer or Enchirito isn’t really Mexican food, but I don’t care, it’s good to me. I have eaten Mexican food in Mexico and didn’t much care for it. I’ll take the Taco Bell any day.

cookieman's avatar

Papa Ginos is not Italian food.

Joyce Chen’s is not Chinese Food.

Taco Bell is not Mexican Food.

And visiting Epcot Center is not the same as visiting another country.

augustlan's avatar

No.

But I still crave the tacos frequently. And have you tried the CARAMEL APPLE EMPANADA? So good! It tastes just like the old school McDonald’s Apple Pies when they used to be deep fried, but a little more cinnamon-y.

Allie's avatar

Oh my goodness, YES @augustlan!!! Sooo good.

Dr_C's avatar

As a Mexican I find the thought of calling taco bell Mexican food both gross and insulting

augustlan's avatar

@Dr_C You’re back! I was missing you. :)

Dr_C's avatar

@augustlan i missed you guys too. I’m without computer for the week.. just borrowing one to get my fluther fix and say hi to all my jellies!
