Is a diet with a lot of grapefruit bad in some way?

Asked by Fred931 (9434points) July 15th, 2009 from iPhone

I love grapefruit. Grapefruit juice, grapefruit salad, grapefruit fruit… Then I heard from a relative that something in grapefruits could conflict with some sorts of medicine. Is this true, and if it is, what kinds of medications does it screw up, or in fact, does it have anything to do with meds at all??

Here is what I located at Wikipedia:

Grapefruit can have a number of interactions with drugs, often increasing the effective potency of compounds. Grapefruit contains naringin, bergamottin and dihydroxybergamottin, which inhibit the protein isoform CYP3A4 predominately in the liver. It is via inhibition of this enzyme that grapefruit increases the effects of a variety of drugs. The effect of grapefruit juice with regard to drug absorption was originally discovered in 1989. However, the effect became well-publicized after being responsible for a number of deaths due to overdosing on medication.

Grapefruit juice may be the first documented, but apple and orange juices have been also implicated in interfering with etoposide, a chemotherapy drug, some beta blocker drugs used to treat high blood pressure, and cyclosporine, taken by transplant patients to prevent rejection of their new organs.

Dudley Dursley didn’t lose weight on it… therefore, I don’t think it works.

Whenever you have a need for prescription medicine, ask the pharmacist who fills the prescription for the data sheet for the drugs contained. If there is likely to be any contraindications they will be listed there.

I too like grapefruit, eat a lot of it, and have had problem over the past few years (on cancer treatment) where I had to avoid it temporarily.

Unless you are on a permanent course of medicine that is contra-indicated there is nothing wrong with grapefruit.

For sure it interferes with high blood pressure meds.

Check your medications by using a drug interaction Web site. Here is one resource.

If you don’t have a conflict, then enjoy. Grapefruit is very good for you and has a lot of antioxidants.

I’ll tell my doctor relative about all that wikipedia info. She’ll know what it means

Fred931's avatar

She says none of my drugs have to do with any of that.

I know benzodiazepines and grapefruit juice, or grapefruit, leads to increased sedation and bad juju.
I too love grapefruit, but it took awhile to realize that my Northern European makeup didn’t get along. The acidity and particular enzymes, seem to be too much for some systems to handle.

too much citrus is bad for your tooth enamel

That’s not good @strange1 since the Satsumas are ripe and I’ve been eating a few thousand a day.

Well, it has a lot of grapefruits in it, for starters. I hate grapefruit. I expect that a reliance on graperfruit for nutrition will leave you lacking.
