Can Tequila ever come back into my life again?

Asked by HotAsIce911 (156points) July 21st, 2009

So, basically.. I love Tequila and around Christmas time I drank way too much of it, way too fast and ended up in and out of consciousness, while throwing up, for 3 – 4 hours. Needless to say, worst hangover ever. Then in January I tried to do a shot of Tequila, the smell made me want to puke and as soon as I took the shot, I did exactly that. Even mixing Tequila in orange juice made my stomach upset. I haven’t tried drinking it since January and was wondering if I will be able to enjoy Tequila ever again?

I do not know about you but when I was 16 I did the same but with Jack Daniels. I still cannot stand the smell of it and that was years ago. I can tolerate it in a mixed drink if it is weak though.

Your body is trying to tell you something. You may want to listen.

This is a basic survival mechanism. Your body wants you to live. This is a similar reaction t getting food poisoning (actually, this is food poisoning) and my experience with that is you never eat the food that got you sick again.

Even if the food is just an unfortunate bystander while getting the flu, you may never want to eat that particular food again.

Nope, switch to vodka.

I got very sick off of tequila when I was 20. I can’t drink any hard liquor anymore, even if I wanted to. I’m 38 now. I suggest switching to beer if you really like to drink.

@jonsblond My Condolences..

I use to drink liquor…I drank way too much once when I was in San Antonio. I had nothing but tequila and corona’s all night long. I got sooo sick because of it, that now whenever I smell a liquor, or even think of taking a shot, I get that sick feeling in my stomach.

I just stick to beer now, I still can’t stand the smell of liquor, and it’s been almost 4 years.

Enjoy? Passing out, horrible hangover, and puking do not sound like you enjoyed it.

marinelife's avatar

You’re done. I did the same thing in college with Canadian Club and Sprite. I cannot even abide the smell of it—many, many years later.

It might be kind of difficult for your brain and stomach to overcome, but I guess if you really wanted to (and you took it slow the next time) you might be able to befriend tequila again….. if that’s what you wanted to do.

Thanks to nine BJ shots on New Years I’ll never have Bailey’s or Kahlua again. And I don’t want to either.

I suffered alcohol poisoning from Tequila and Bacardi 151, drinking both straight from the bottle, about 21 years ago.
It took a couple years before I could drink either again, but I can.
Sorry, best stay away from them for now. Alcohol is not your friend.

I had the same problem doing something similar with tequila at about the same age. Never could drink it again, so I switched to rum – Rum Collins is a great drink – it is sweet and sour and you get Vitamin C with it.

Actually, now that I am “smarter” (translation: older than dirt) I sometimes have beer or wine, but no longer consume anything that is more than 24 proof.

i had a similar experience…from drinking a glass full of buttermilk. now, don’t like butter, even butterfinger tastes terrible, and rethinking the experience…..gag!

alcohol, in the otherhand, i’m fine with…too fine!

jrpowell's avatar

I have been in that boat. 15 years later and the smell makes me want to puke.

Try water.

dude, same thing happened to me and vodka… I absolutely love vodka, used to drink it straight without any issue… drank way too much, same case as you… this was three years ago, and I’m just starting to be able to stomach vodka again, and even now all I can really tolerate is one shot of it… it sucks, I know how you feel.

Why are you trying so hard to drink tequila? Take a hint from your body.

whatthefluther's avatar

Chances are you drank the popular Cuervo or Sauza Gold tequila. Clear tequilas taste better and are much more forgiving. I prefer Patron Silver. It’s a premium tequila so a bit more expensive but I’ve never had a bad experience with shooters or mixing it. You might give it a try.

filmfann's avatar

Isn’t Patron very expensive?

Facade's avatar

I agree with @whatthefluther
I don’t drink hard liquors but my babe drinks Patron often and never has a problem

yuck

whatthefluther's avatar

@filmfann…The Silver is about $35 a bottle and the Gran Platinum is around $150+ a bottle (and why I settle for the Silver, available at Costco at a slightly better price).

This has happened to a number of my tequila-loving friends. It’s my favorite, too – I would hate to lose tequila :(

I had a similar experience with Bacardi O, and have not been able to drink it since. I have a hard time with any rum, actually, and maybe it is due to this – never thought about it before.

Were you trying to drink the same brand of tequila when you drank it again recently? Maybe if you moved up the quality chain a bit and went for some Patron or Don Julio…

DrasticDreamer's avatar

No, you probably won’t be able to drink it ever again. I did something similar when I was a teenager – with a different kind of alcohol – and I still can’t even smell it without wanting to vomit. That was about eight years ago.

fireside's avatar

I did the same with Southern Comfort 15 years ago, and never could stand it again.
Of course, I don’t drink at all now and prefer life unaltered.

Go with orange juice without the tequila.
It’s a real pick-me up.

Zendo's avatar

What it really means is that you need to change your mixers. Try lemonade, not OJ, and margaritas both blended and stirred…salt and no salt…And body shot it once in a while off a fine foxy bod.

Inofaith's avatar

I wasn’t aware of this mechanism.

Is this psychological? or does your body really no longer tolerate the thing you overdosed?

Zendo's avatar

@Inofaith You never heard of tolerance levels?

Inofaith's avatar

@Zendo I was talking about the effect afterwards: the smell repulsing you whereas previously smelling Tequila would do no harm.

Of coarse drinking excessive amounts of liquor results in poisoning.

If somebody had a bad experience with something, being reminded of it would make them think about why it was so bad in the past. But this sounds more like a new impulse.

Your body appears to be smarter than you are, in this instance.

ABoyNamedBoobs03's avatar

@PandoraBoxx psh, Tequila is good for you… puts hair on your chest, makes you a man! ;)

When I was 17 my favorite liquor was everclear. Almost 4 years later and I can’t even stand the smell of hand sanitizer because it’s too similar to everclear. So good luck with that!

I’m actually getting nauseous even typing about it now

Darwin's avatar

@ABoyNamedBoobs03 But I don’t want hair on my chest. I like being a girl.

whatthefluther's avatar

@sjmc1989…Ah, Everclear! We used to take fresh ripe cherries and add equal parts sugar and 190 proof Everclear and seal in a mason jar. Shake well once a week and after a couple of months you would have marvelous spiked cherries (great on ice cream or just pop them in your mouth) and the red liquid would be a sweet cherry flavor with a hell of a kick! The 190 proof stuff was outlawed in California quite a few years ago, so we would have to go to Nevada to get it, but alas, they too outlawed it a few years back.

Jack_Haas's avatar

I used to drink so much I got sick with just about every liquor I enjoyed save for vodka. But I got fed up with alcohol and stopped going out like 3, maybe even 4 years ago. I even got tired of beer, I don’t even drink it during races or ball games anymore.

dee101's avatar

I had the same experience with tequila shooters, and could not drink tequila, smell it or have anything to do with it. The happened when I was in my late 20’s. So, tequila lover, it actually took me 15 years before I could take it again. So guess what, this last weekend I was on this low carb diet, after eating nothing but a small breakfast. I’m a woman in my 50’s now. I had 2 margarita/rocks at a nice restaurant (right? Nice places tend to short the pour). I’ve been sick for 2 days, with cramps, and with nothing to throw up—and now its the 2nd day and I actually have a 100 degree fever. Maybe you’ll get a taste for tequila back in a decade or two, but I think its got a killer reaction that might not be so great. I love tequila, but right now, I’m not wanting any either—again.

ItsAHabit's avatar

I suspect that you will never be able to tolerate the taste of tequila.
