If you could only listen to 3 CD's forever, what would they be?

Asked by PerryDolia (3481points) August 12th, 2009

If you had to choose only 3 CD’s (or vinyl) albums that would be the only 3 you could listen to for the rest of your life, what would they be?

Here are my three:
Wave (Antonio Carlos Jobim)
Aja (Steely Dan)
Time Out (Dave Brubeck)

This question is too difficult. I edited my three choices so many times that I realized I can’t choose just three.

@drdoombot- Exactly! Three are just too damn few to pick from. It’s obvious to me that @PerryDolia is evil!

The Smiths The Queen Is Dead
DMB (ahh…too hard!!) Crash
The Shins Chutes Too Narrow

But James Taylor could be switched out for some Crosby, Stills & Nash, or some CCR, or some Simon and Garfunkel, or… Okay, I give up – this is too hard!

OK, there’s only one way I could do this….first I would have to select the albums I know by heart, the ones where I sing along (if only in my head) to every single song, every single note, every single word…the albums that essentially define my taste in music. Then I’d have to take some artists (the Beatles come immediately to mind) and say that their musical legacy was so abundant, wide and varied that the only way I could get the essence of them in one album would be to pick a greatest hits album (even though I generally despise GH albums because I already have all the material elsewhere). Then I would have to narrow the list down to one album from each artist….some artists might have several entries, but I’d have to pick my favorite among them. If I do that, I’m going to end up with a list that’s 10 times as big as I need. So, let’s do that…shall we?

1 AC/DC – Back in Black
2 Anthrax – The Sound of White Noise
3 The Beastie Boys – Check Your Head
4 The Beatles – 1
5 Black Sabbath – We Sold Our Soul for Rock and Roll
6 Elvis Costello – The Very Best of Elvis Costello & The Attractions
7 Cypress Hill – Black Sunday
8 Danko Jones – We Sweat Blood
9 The Donnas – Bitchin’
10 Enuff Z’Nuff – Strength
11 Faith No More – The Real Thing
12 Guns N Roses – Appetite for Destruction
13 House of Pain – Same As It Ever Was
14 INXS – Kick
15 Led Zeppelin – In Through The Out Door
16 Living Colour – Stain
17 Ludacris – Back for the First Time
18 Megadeth – Rust in Peace
19 Nirvana – In Utero
20 Pantera – A Vulgar Display of Power
21 Prince – Symbol Album
22 Red Hot Chili Peppers – Blood Sugar Sex Magic
23 The Smithereens – Green Thoughts
24 Queen – A Night At the Opera
25 Skid Row – Slave to the Grind
26 They Might Be Giants – Apollo 18
27 Tom Waits – Beautiful Maladies
28 Urge Overkill – Saturation
29 White Stripes – Elephant

OK, so that’s 29 albums I’d have a hard time living without ever hearing again, but just for the sake of argument, I’ll create a random number generator in a spreadsheet and pick 3 numbers at random. So, let’s do that, shall we?

OK, I get:

INXS – Kick
Megadeth – Rust in Peace
The Smithereens – Green Thoughts

I’m happy with that.
