8am, sure. If you don’t have a job.

Or work from home.

when the alarm goes off.

marinelife's avatar

Wow, I am not sure there is an average. When my husband worked at night and I worked from home, we went to bed quite late (he got off at 1 A.M.) and did not get up until 10.

Now, he is laid off but doing contract work, and we usually get up around 8. If he has day work, we get up earlier at around 6 A.M.

My first post was super pretentious sounding. I didn’t mean it like that, folks.

teh_kvlt_liberal's avatar

Either 6,7 or 8 AM

Amount of sleep needed (in hours) + time person x fell asleep = time person x wakes? Unfortunately this formula does not work if you have loud neighbours like me, in that case it is 6 am. Ps. whats wrong with the spelling of: ‘neighbours’ according to fluther it is spelled wrong.

filmfann's avatar

I get up at 5am.
The local radio station always says “Rise and shine, it’s 6am”.
My kids awoke at the crack of noon, much like I did at that age.
My wife gets up about 9, if she has no plans.

I don’t think there is a norm.

augustlan's avatar

@markyy Fluther doesn’t have spellcheck, it’s your browser. In America, it’s spelled “neighbors”, with no “u”.

<——Average Person- Wakes up at 6:30am on weekdays.

<——Lazy Person- Wakes up at 11:00am on weekends.

filmfann's avatar

@markyy It’s true. U ain’t in the Neighborhood.

markyy's avatar

@Tink1113 Are you calling me lazy?
@augustlan & @filmfann I do feel stupid, but maybe I can find comfort in the fact that I live much closer to England than the US ;)

You might find this graph interesting.

Well my 5 year old gets up at 5am .
I get up at anything between 5 and 6 am .
My 2 year old gets up between 6 and 7am < sometimes sleeps in
My wife gets up whenever normally between 7 and 8 am < unless she has had a bad night with a restless bump then i let her sleep longer :)

I personally need at least 8 hours of sleep. I get between 6–7hours though. I went to bed early last night, around 11:15pm, and I do wake up when my son wakes up..but my husband stays up with him, and I go back to sleep I know my husband sleeps as well. Bothers me to no end, but I literally cannot function in the mornings I guess I prefer 9 hours of sleep. So I wake up around 9–10am.

I’d think the “average” person woke up at 7am though.

stupid o’clock…dosnt matter when it is its always stupid o’clock and its always too early

cwilbur's avatar

What time do you need to be up in the morning? There’s no point in getting up at 6 am if you don’t have to be at work until 9, and it only takes you 20 minutes to get ready and 20 minutes to commute.

On the other hand, if your parents are saying this because you are unemployed, living under their roof, and sleeping all day, you don’t have much of a leg to stand on.

@markyy No not you, notice the arrows pointing to me?
But who knows….maybe….

AstroChuck's avatar

If I were average I’d let you know.

Vincentt's avatar

@Tink1113 Are you calling 11:00 AM lazy? Peanuts.

Neighbours ftw

martijn86's avatar

6AM to 6.30AM mostly, on mondays and fridays 7.30AM.

You should open a poll for this somewhere and get neat statistics!

My body wakes up on it’s own about 5:30am, I look around and decide if I need to get up or not.

evelyns_pet_zebra's avatar

I work second shift, 2 pm to 10 pm. I get up at about 9:30 am every morning. But then, I’m not average or normal. =)

Life is about choices, your results may vary.

Sarcasm's avatar

I wake up by 10.

I’ve got a few friends who work graveyard shifts at various places and don’t wake up till 5pm.

SierraGirl's avatar

5am for work. I sleep later on weekends but am usually awake by 7

drdoombot's avatar

Well I feel like a bum. I wake up at 12pm every day of the week. But in my defense, I usually get to bed after 4am.

One study of middle aged people found that the average waking time for men was 6:18 and for women: 6:20. It was a rather small sample, though, and I can’t tell how representative it is.

In Sleep Schedules and Daytime Functioning in Adolescents, the authors found that high school students generally woke around 6 am on school days, and 9:30 am on weekends.

in PERSONALITY CORRELATES WITH SLEEP-WAKE VARIABLES, the authors studied 225 University of Pittsburgh Graduates, and their average wake-up time was 6:30 with a standard deviation of 39 minutes.

Here’s an online poll:
What time do you get up on weekdays?
Earlier than 4 a.m. 4%
4 a.m. 3%
4:30 a.m. 5%
5 a.m. 8%
5:30 a.m. 9%
6 a.m. 14%
6:30 a.m. 12%
7 a.m. 11%
7:30 a.m. 8%
8 a.m. 5%
8:30 a.m. 3%
9 a.m. 3%
I just sleep until I wake up! 15%

Most of the studies looked at adolescents and college students. I couldn’t get access to the National Sleep Study data. Just stupid reports.

Anyway, it’s interesting. I’d say that the average wake time is between 6 am and 6:30 am. I hope you don’t ask the same question about average go to bed time.

Tink's avatar

@Vincentt haha yes I am, I am called lazy when I wake up at 11:00am

OpryLeigh's avatar

I usually set my alarm at 7.45am which gives me enough time to get showered, dressed and made up (I say made up, I mean mascara-ed!) before work which starts at 9.00am

If I don’t have to work then I just get up naturally which is usually between 9.00am and 10.00am although I do tend to get up a bit earlier than that to let the dog out before going back to bed!

Dorkgirl's avatar

Between 6 and 6:30 most mornings. My husband gets up at 4:30 three days a week to go to the gym before work, but about 6:45 the other days.
“Sleeping in” on the weekends means 7–7:30 usually.

tiffyandthewall's avatar

@johnpowell‘s graph amuses me, because i am in that 4% of americans that are still sleeping at 3pm…
granted, it is the summer for me…

ekans's avatar

I know that my average wakeup time is nowhere near the times that you are suggesting. But, of course, I am a college student who, on some days specifically mondays, doesn’t have a class until 1:00 PM.

augustlan's avatar

I am up all night and sleep most of the day. Then again, I am not average. I must have been a vampire in a previous life.

Vincentt's avatar

@Tink1113 Don’t let them fool you, 11:00 is just fine. Tell them I said it ;-)

Tink's avatar

@Vincentt Alright, I will. :)

jonsblond's avatar

I wish I could sleep in until 8am. My husband gets up at 5:15 so he can leave by 6am for work. He wakes me up at 5:30. I wake my sons up at 6:15 so they can leave for school by 7am. I wake my daughter at 7 so we can walk to her school by 8am.

My fiance says I’m lazy for sleeping until 10am. Does any one agree with that? Is 10 too late?

jojomanz's avatar

I don’t get up until 11:45 to 1:15 somewhere in that rang but sometimes my mom wakes me up at 8 or 9 cause she wants me to work around the house.
