Are you in competition or cahoots?

Asked by peedub (8708points) September 23rd, 2009

Solo mission or go-team-go?

The question is framed; you might be neither, however, I think many can classify themselves as one or the other.

Don’t worry, this is not a job interview.

Solo mission is how I go about things. Because I don’t like relying on others or having others rely on me. I like being control even if it means complete and utter failure . . . which it usually does.

Depends on the goal. If it is a project for work, go team go.. if it is my life in general outside of work… it seems to be a solo mission.

Well, I used to be pretty competitive but gave it up. Now I’m happily in cahoots with @sccrowell and everything has been working out quite nicely. See ya….Gary/wtf

I can’t work for anyone. I work best alone. I like people but don’t need people. In a group situation, I’m good as long as the decisions are made on sound principles without personality preferences..which of course never happens so…but as far as competition, I just try to achieve personal goals. Whatever anyone else feels about that is none of my business and hopefully they don’t should on me. You should do this…you should do that. You could make more money doing this…

I agree with NaturalMineralWater – depends on what I’m up to.

Losing weight? It was a team oriented ‘exercise’ – joined a ‘Biggest Loser’ type contest and lost 30 pounds. Twice a week group training kept me motivated and focused. However, when I wanted to lose 20 more lbs. it was a solo effort. I did it and after nine months lost 50 lb.!

Other things such as work – solo is the only way to go. I am a social person. But I have to work at home to get stuff done. I get paid by what I produce, so when I was working with others, I didn’t produce a lot because I was too chatty!

Control is a big thing – I am very organized and want things to be just so. With a husband and two teenagers, that seems to be a struggle. But I’m trying to be a team player. It’s hard though! For so many years, as a stay-at-home working Mom I had control…

So…I’m in competition for cahoots? I’m cahooting the competition? I don’t know. It seems to be working though.

I am the most non-competative person you would ever meet. I am a team player for the company I work for, but I definitly have my own ethics and standards, so I wouldn’t say I am in cahoots with them.

zephyr826's avatar

I’m very much a cahoots person. Though if my group is in competition with another group, then I’m more competitive than is probably healthy.

sandystrachan's avatar

Solo but to finish LBP i have to be in cahoots with people

wundayatta's avatar

Cahoots. I can’t do shit without instant feedback and interaction with others. I bounce off other people’s ideas. I rarely have an idea of my own. I just copy from everyone else and put things together a little differently. I need support to keep going. I just can’t go if I’m all by myself.

ABoyNamedBoobs03's avatar

Cahoots. not for any real reason other than I’ll take any excuse I can find to say Cahoots.

cahoots!

tinyfaery's avatar

I’m in cahoots with my wife, but I have too little faith in most people to do anything in a group. But it’s not competition with others. I’m in competition with myself.

marinelife's avatar

I tend more toward solo missions when it comes to work. When it comes to the personal, I am in cahoots with a trusted few.

Cahoots. w00t w00t!

christine215's avatar

I’m in cahoots, unless there’s some kind of chicanery involved, then I fly solo

(I like saying chicanery)

He who is in cahoots wears boots with the troops,
yet he who is not in cahoots does not always oppose the troops with boots.
But sometimes wears loafers on the soafer.

I prefer going solo, but can work with a group! I’m flexible!

For short term, or “sprints”, I prefer solo: buckle down, do what you have to, get the results and take all the glory!
For longer term, or “marathons”, I prefer to be cahoots so I have someone to plot strategy with and bitch about the other teams being losers/cheaters (depending on how the race is going…)

I prefer to go solo, I like to make my own plan and do things my way rather than debating endlessly about how to do something (and then ending up doing it all by myself anyway). Yet I somehow find myself in some sort of de-facto leadership role. Even though I never want to boss anyone around, they come to me actually asking for orders or advice. So I end up playing the team game and somehow resolving conflicts, being an arbitrator in the group etc.

Typical example: in our latest theatre play I had two small roles, plus I was in charge of the music. So I obviously sat down with the director, asked him what he wanted, then went out (alone) and made it. Then I came back and showed him what I got, he pointed out some things he wanted changed, I went away again and came back with a new result and so on. Then I worked one-on-one with the choreographer who then told everybody how to move and so on.

So far so good. But somehow by opening night, I found myself in charge of costumes, props (for the simple reason that everybody seemed to lose their stuff or forget it at home), moral support and backstage conflict resolution, driving people around and of course painting the stage, helping with the lights and sound and even dressing one of the children. Oh and finding fresh fruit to use in one of the scenes. Oh and helping the guy turn the stage (it was rotating). Needless to say a couple of actors even asked me about how they were supposed to say their lines and whether I thought they should do it differently. To which I obviously answered “what are you telling me for? Go ask the director!”.

Sorry this was too long, but I think it illustrates my point. It is always like that. Got voted in the school board, then on some organising comittee at uni, the supervisory board of an international student organisation and so on. I never actually plan to be in these positions, but I somehow get stuck with them and try to make the best of it.

But I personally much rather have a specific role just for me and stick to that.

I know this is @Peedub ‘s question but I thought there were some great answers so I extended some free lurve to all.
@Jack79….Perhaps I can explain your situation: you are not just more than competent….you are talented and a nice, helpful and considerate gentleman. I won’t use the words “take advantage of” due to connotation, but, who wouldn’t want to utilize those resources if available for the asking or taking?
@ABoyNamedBoobs03….I think it’s a fun word too, but did you notice that several others took it to another level:
@aprilsimnel added some rhyme, @christine215 doubled the pleasure by working in “chicanery” and @SeventhSense wrote a whole gosh darn poem using it.
*Cahoots” to all and, @daloon…great post, keep up the nice work….I’m in cahoots on your count-up to 20K….your milestone bio is begging to be written and shared, my friend!

@whatthefluther I don’t think this is necessarily the case, though yes, it has happened sometimes that people have found that I am reliable and want to dump stuff on me because of that. I don’t think they are meaning it in a bad way, but yes, it has happened. More usually though they seem to think I’d make a good leader. It’s the same in my band, where I want our guitarist to be the leader, but everybody assumes it’s me. I think though that part of it is exactly that reason: a politician who is too keen to become president may be arrogant, corrupt or even plan to use his power for his own gain. Someone who doesn’t want it that much seems more dependable I guess. So it’s probably that type of logic.

whatthefluther's avatar

@Jack79 for President!
(I can’t seem to get @dalepetrie to run for office….perhaps you would consider him for a running mate? I can see the headline now: White House Overrun by a Fluther of Jellies ! I don’t believe you were born in the States but not to worry….we’ll amend the Constitution….just don’t let that Republican, Arnold “The Terminator” Schwarzenegger slip in)!
See ya….Gary/wtf/lurve whore

SeventhSense's avatar

I get nervous when there’s talk of amending the Constitution…

Its all about soloing. All the glory, less confusion, and everything done the way you want it to be. I hate group projects or implementing someone else’s work while programming. I’d rather do it all from scratch and by myself if I can.

kitszu's avatar

Judgement call.

There might not be an “I” in “Team” but there are no shortages of individuals.
I’m as loyal as they come, that said, I have my priorities.

We all have a core “team” and that team starts with..‘I’ and what matters most to me.

Me? I’m a ‘go-team-go’ right up ‘til a point…Exactly, what is that point? (Not mine, yours.)
