Mixing vodka and water, what is the ratio?

Asked by RandomMrdan (7436points) October 14th, 2009

I’ve heard it’s a good drink to be mixed. Should the water be cold, or room temperature? Should I add anything else other than just water?

How do you mix your vodka?

Do it to taste. The water is just to mellow out the vodka.

I would do a glass of vodka with a splash of water for color :)

Uhm. I’m not exactly an expert here, but I was under the impression that Vodka is tasteless. What’s the point of mixing two tasteless liquids?

What is the point? Vodka doesn’t have much flavor, and water doesn’t either. Why not mix it with something that tastes good, such as juice?

Better yet, leave out the vodka and drink the juice.

@MrItty actually I think it taste a bit like rubbing alcohol, but enjoy it being mixed.

Personally I prefer a vodka shooter with a water chaser. But that is just me.

I’ve heard that mixing water with vodka is actually quite good, and it brings out a lot of the taste in the vodka.

but, also been told to get a good vodka, like Belvedere.

Capt_Bloth's avatar

It lessens the burn of cheap vodka, but I do prefer mixing with cranberry juice.

Vodka definitely has a taste, subtle, but distinct. It is what I drink if I don’t feel like Scotch – usually good Russian or Polish.

The ratio is a glass full of ice.
Then poor the Vodka over the ice.

A shot of vodka and a slice of cucumber or tomato – sounds weird but is actually wonderful. Traditional Russian way of drinking the stuff. Cucumber is almost all water. Does it count?

Or: a shot of vodka and then an ice cube to suck on.

Hmm, I never tried mixing it with water. My favorite hot weather cocktail is a melon ball: vodka, midori, & oj. I think I like gin better than vodka in cranberry juice.

RandomMrdan's avatar

yeah, I’ve even been told if mixed with water, you can barely taste any liquor in the drink at all. I’m not sure if I completely believe that or not though…I’ll have to try it out later tonight, though, I’m fresh out of vodka.

The only water that should be mixed with Vodka is the frozen kind

I’m totally with @Capt_Bloth – cranberry makes the vodka go down, the vodka go down, the vodka go down.

Capt_Bloth's avatar

@Zen the only vodka drink I’ll have is “Kettle and cran.”

Vodka is definitely not tasteless, but since most of the vodka is already water, it just serves to weaken it, lowering the taste and the proof.

ABoyNamedBoobs03's avatar

what a sin. watering down your vodka… Russians everywhere are weeping for you.

When I drink vodka, I like it with Sprite and a splash of cranberry. I don’t care for watered down vodka. To me it just tastes like watered down vodka.

Vodkas have very different takes when consumed straight. They are only tasteless when mixed with juices. It’s usually the second sip of straight vodka that gives you the true taste.
