Men: what is you sock preference?

Asked by noelasun (1894points) October 14th, 2009

For instance, does material/color/thickness/warmth matter? what about dress shoes versus non-dress shoes?

Could you state which kind you prefer for dress shoes and which you prefer for athletic shoes?
(and what’s up with the gold toe socks? is that just a fashion statement, or do they have a purpose?)

None, but not always possible.

Light and breathable for dress shoes.

Cotton and medium thickness for sportiness.

I don’t like to wear socks in bed though.

Why do women’s sock preferences not interest you? Just curious.

aphilotus's avatar

I like it when women wear long socks with skirts.

OH! You mean my preference for my own socks? Uh, black cotton ones? with dress shoes.

noelasun's avatar

@rooeytoo Because I’m shopping for a guy and I’m not a guy, and I already know what kind of socks I prefer.

Most of the time I wear super-short “no show” white socks that don’t show when I’m wearing shoes. I wear these most often when I’m wearing shorts because it’s then that I don’t want socks to show. Additionally, they’re cooler in the warmer months. When it’s colder, I wear longer standard ankle-level socks when I wear jeans and pants. For dress shoes, I wear thin black socks that are even longer. Been following this pattern for years…

If you are shopping for socks for a guy (aged 20 to 30) i’d go with these tips (it’s what i’d want):

- Dark only, no whites under any circumstances.
– If it’s a present either:
* Aim for more expensive ones, any ones will do aslong as the fabric seems good quality
* If in for more cheap styles, try with some cool/funny print (on black!), like skulls or something.
– If it’s not a present go to his drawer and check what he has and buy more of that, he will like you for it.

For sneakers: Black regular sports socks (cotton, ankle length)
For dress shoes: Black dress-socks (thinner, good quality, ankle length)

also… have any of you tried bamboo blend socks? Are they really superior to regular cotton socks?

I always buy socks for women. They much more fun. Socks for men are truly boring.

I prefer plain, white socks (Logos are fine. Most of mine are adidas). I assume they’re cotton, not sure. Just whatever was cheap and easy to find at the store.
I wear the style that sit just a bit above the ankles. I think the model is a female, but this is a good idea of the height that I wear.

I’ve never tried bamboo blend socks, but my sheets are bamboo blend and I really enjoy that. I don’t know how well it’s translate to socks.

Edit: I barely ever dress up nicely. Last time I did it was on new years for a wedding. I wore the only pair of black socks I have.

Smartwool merino wool socks. Cotton socks are crap and uncomfortable.

I used to wear “no show” socks like @DominicX describes, but I found that some of my sneakers would scrape my Achilles tendon, making a bloody mess a couple of times. I now opt for ankle-length instead. And always black socks. I rarely do white washes, so I almost never buy white socks.

I like the socks that stay below the ankle, they seem to look better with shoes, I hate any sock that goes above the ankle. I even wear them when I have jeans.

Sarcasm's avatar

I don’t wear “no show” socks for the same reason as @drdoombot. Such a painful experience.

O's avatar

@Sarcasm Never had that problem.

rooeytoo's avatar

Well I’m gonna tell you what I think because no one has said it so far. If you are buying socks to wear with sneakers, get the dri fit or a similar tech sock. They are so much better than cotton because they wick so your feet never feel wet and sweaty. Merino wool is great too but more expensive. Nike makes dri fit but most all brands that make sneakers have their own version.

RandomMrdan's avatar

I also like the dark socks, I rarely will buy white socks.

@drdoombot

Yeah, unfortunately that has happened to me before, but only once or twice out of the 100s of times I’ve worn those socks. Not sure what would make some instances different than others, but on those few cases I would suddenly notice that my feet hurt and then I look down and see blood on my socks and a big scraped off area on the Achilles-tendon area. Not fun.

for suits, the socks must compliment the shoe color and the slacks. they cannot be thick and bulky. for everyday wear, with work boots, the white sweatsock is best. for running shoes, it has to be the ankle sock. for being at home in front of a fire, it has to be thermal socks for that and outdoor camping as well.

for cutting grass it is black knee-high socks and bermuda shorts—nah, just kidding, but i’m sure you have a visual.

I prefer good quality crew-length cotton athletic-style socks all the time… even with dressier shoes. I wear white socks of that kind with white athletic shoes, or black ones with any other kind or color of shoe.

ABoyNamedBoobs03's avatar

with dress shoes, usually black or blue depending on the suit colour.

anything else, low cut and breathable.

I like brand new white cotton socks. Ankle or ¾ is fine. If I was rich I would wear a brand new pair everyday and give the others to charity.

some really nice socks are those from Dr, Schoels. They claim to be made for people with diabetes(for circulation issues.) I don’t have diabetes but those socks make me feel like I’m floating on air. I wouldn’t call them dressy, more like utilitarian if hiking or whenever you just want your feet to feel excellent.

My husband only wears white socks. He used to insist on white tube socks, but now he has to have white diabetic socks or else he can buy his own!

He used to only wear black oxfords made by SAS, but now he wears size 12½ Extra Wide New Balance. His podiatrist insisted on getting him some official diabetic shoes but they rubbed a hole in his foot.

He was in the Navy for a very long time, which is why he likes white socks. They go with the white sailor suit so nicely.

My husband is very sock picky. He wants no-show socks (less than ankle). He also prefers black to any other color. This is for his tennis shoes.

For his boots (because he fishes and does outdoor activities) he needs thick wool socks. These are actually a pretty good gift as they aren’t really cheap and you can get spendy on them. For some reason the men I know seem to be able to tell the difference which is pretty nice for gift-giving.

He wears any of the socks for his dress shoes, haha. I prefer to wear mens dress socks so perhaps it’s because I confiscate the nice ones when he has them.

Someone above said men’s socks are “truly boring” and they are so right. I like socks that have bold colors and I recently found this site with a bunch of fun colored dress socks.
Not So Serious Socks
I just ordered a pair of solid pink socks and a pair of multi colored green yellow and blue socks. Let me know if anyone wants a review when I get them.
And I think the Gold Toe socks are a brand that in my experience are comfortable and well made.

I do not EVER wear socks in my Vans or Nikes
