What would you do if you were born again?

Asked by Samurai (1194points) October 18th, 2009

Lets say you were reborn again in the past with all of your thoughts and memories from the first time, what would you do if you could redo it all in any way you could?

Would you try to do things you regretted not doing, or even change things you do regret doing before, what would these things be? Would you show off to your teachers how well you can do in school, or would you do something different altogether?

Probably the exact same things. It’s easy to say “I would do this different” but if I was still the same person I don’t know that I would be able to do those things any differently. Even with the knowledge I have now.

I would not go to high school, or at least participate as little as possible. I can’t even account for all the time wasted trying to “impress” colleges with grades and advanced courses and extracurricular activities. I could have learned 10 languages if I had just done the bare minimum in school and used my own time for something that mattered.

I make my money programming and tutoring French and Math, for none of which I would give any thanks to high school.

No need. I was born right the first time.

I cannot imagine anything so stiflingly boring. You would have to make through all those years of childhood, an adult in a child’s body. Being a wunderkind would wear off pretty quickly and you would imprisoned, trapped in a world that you couldn’t participate in.

It would be like a prison sentence. Going back to your twenties would be a different thing – that could be fun.

I’d probably second guess religion and engage in more hedonistic activities.

I once read a Harry Potter fanfic where an adult Harry sent his mind back in time to his eleven-year-old body just as he was starting at Hogwarts. At first, his future knowledge was very helpful in stopping the problems that previously took the entire school year to figure out. The drawback, however, was that as he continued to change the past using his foreknowledge, circumstances changed to such a degree that his future knowledge became less and less useful, as he could no longer predict how things would happen in the new present he had created.

I imagine the same thing would apply in real life as well. I can picture myself reliving 8th grade and deciding to go to a better high school, but after that, my old memories wouldn’t mean a thing because my life would be significantly different from that point on. Your previous knowledge is only useful until the first big change you make, really.

I was suicidal at an early age of 7 and this lasted until I was in my early 20’s. I still have problems with my thoughts. With that in mind I would be able to control my thoughts better and not allow that problem to hold me back. Thoughts like this are like an addiction, it takes time to create one and lose one.

I think you’re supposed to tell everyone about it so they will be persuaded to be born again too.

I think that I would be more aware about the people I date. And I would be there when my mom passes. But I don’t think I could handle that a second time around.

I’d try a different path for the sake of trying it. Art and science are fine now, but given the time, I’d try being a baker or a zoologist and see what it’s like. Not so completely different but things I just don’t have the time for in this life.
Maybe become a mad scientist with a castle. That would be cool too.
