Have you ever visited a place because you saw it in a movie?

Asked by SpatzieLover (24606points) October 22nd, 2009

For example, I’d like to go to Cafe Lalo in NYC after seeing it in You’ve Got Mail I also plan to go to this charming town in Illinois since it was featured in Groundhog’s Day

Where have you been or where would you like to go after seeing it in a movie?

No, but I have stayed at a ranch not far from the place of filming for The Birds in Bodega Bay, and by sheer coincidence got a chance to watch that movie on TCM while there.

@shego Did it give you the chills or spook you at all?

@SpatzieLover not really, but once it got dark, that’s when it got scary we stayed the night. I was in high school, and I was hosting a foreign exchange student, and the night before we watched the movie.

After seeing “The Hangover”, my friends and I went to Las Vegas and we sought out a street corner in Vegas where part of the movie was filmed…lol!

Other than that, I would love to go to Greece after seeing “Mama Mia!”. (I’ve been to Greece, but only to a few towns…it was a cruise). I’d also like to see South Africa (been there as well, but I was 2) and District 9 was filmed there, albeit not in the greatest area…

I’d also love to see the places in England where the Harry Potter movies are filmed.

When we stayed in Montmartre last summer, the cafe on the corner was the cafe setting for Amelie. We had lunch there one day and I kept expecting/hoping Amelie would be our server.

In general, I like to visit sites that are connected to books or authors, rather than movies. I’ve been to the Brontes’ parsonage, Haworth, in Yorkshire on a windy, dark December day, to Austen’s cottage at Chawton and to Lyme Regis and stood looking out at the Cobb like the French Lieutenant’s Woman.

I went to Mountain Lake in Virginia where part of Dirty Dancing was filmed. I had lived very close to it for years but never visited.

@janbb I love Amelie! All of your ideas are like mine also. I’d love to tootle through Yorkshire due to James Herriot, et al.

@SpatzieLover My son lived in Montmartre for a year – it is a truly magical neighborhood.

We did happen to be in Gloucester, Mass. the summer that the The Perfect Storm came out and saw it in a theatre there.

Another summer, we vacationed in New Hampshire and read that in a neighboring Vermont town, they were premiering the Rip Torn film Where the Rivers Flow North in a movie theatre that was used for a scene in the film. We went to see it and that was really a neat experience.

I’ve been on the trails that Daniel Day Lewis ran on in Last of the Mohicans at Chimney Rock, NC. Dirty Dancing also had parts filmed in Lake Lure, NC, where I’ve spent time.

North Carolina has had a few films made here.

@syz That is one of my fav movies of all time!

@SpatzieLover What I wouldn’t give to see him running around shirtless in the mountains!!

The only reason I went to Dresden is because I had read Slaughterhouse-Five.

I know this is about movies, but books should count too.

SpatzieLover's avatar

@johnpowell I agree & would edit it as such if I could. I’m a voracious reader, too. I can think of many places I’d like to visit that I’ve read in books. Many of which later became movies or TV shows/specials

I wanted to see London because I saw it in films and on Monty Python. I’ve still to go to Broadcasting House for a tour, though. Then I went there and fell in love. If I could move there today with a job lined up, I would.

I moved to NYC because of Sesame Street and the Electric Company.

Living in NYC, I’ve been to many places that appear in movies, though never for that reason. Hell, I was having chocolate milkshakes at the Seinfeld diner for weeks before someone pointed out to me where we were. I also live in Forest Hills, home of Spider-man (the movies, not surprisingly, were shot in a different area: Woodhaven Blvd. It’s not too far from where I am, but it has a different feel than Forest Hills).

One of the few times I’ve actively sought out a location mentioned somewhere was when I was in St. Petersburg, Russia, a few years back. I made it a point to walk around in the neighborhood where Raskolnikov lived in Crime and Punishment. It was pretty cool. The only other time I can think of right now is when I stopped by the Stardust hotel and casino in Las Vegas because it appeared in the movie Casino. It wasn’t nearly as nice as I expected it to be, but it is one of the older hotels on the strip.

I eat at the restaurant that in Rain Man, Dustin Hoffman dropped the box of toothpicks and knew how many there were!

They have tons of photos around and a spot marked on the Bar Floor.

Great Italian fare, reasonable prices, delish! and close to many attractions in the Greater Cincinnati Area.

I lived in Land O’ Lakes Florida when Johnny Depp made Edwatrd Scissorhands. I loved looking at those oddly shaped bushes in the Carpenter’s run development!

My SO and I visited Philadelphia because he wanted to see where National Treasure was filmed.

South Florida was a natural destination because I had been obsessed with Miami Vice for years. US Strip Clubs, after seeing Beverly Hills Cop 1 & 2.

My home town was a popular filming spot…Atonement was filmed there and many BBC dramas and such so we would visit those places.

Shamefully I went to some of the places that Carrie visited in Sex And The City whilst in france…

Ya I went to a bunch of the filming locations for the Lord of the Rings movies while I was in New Zealand. Except for Hobbiton. It was $100 to see a bunch of hills with doors in them, but also potentially midgets with hairy feet.
