Why are "sliders" or "burger shots" so popular?

Asked by jaketheripper (2779points) October 23rd, 2009

White castle has always had little burgers. Now every other restaurant you walk into has “sliders” or “burger shots” like they are some kind of delicacy, and often they are more expensive than regular burgers. Why the hell would you pay more for little versions of a food you eat all the time?

The only place I get burgers at is In ‘n’ Out.

Maybe they just want less food?

gussnarp's avatar

Because drunk people get hungry too?

Do you remember the little chicken burgers they used to have a KFC way back in the day? Those were so good especially for children.

But I don’t know why these are popular perhaps it is part of the new trend not to supersize but to eat reasonable proportions of food?

I once went to NYC over the summer, and I saw a place called “Food Fight”. There was a menu (more like a sign really), that priced two small burgers for $5.95 and fries for over $2. I found it absurd and spend $4 on a tasty Döner Kebab

@RedPowerLady: are you talking about Chicken Littles? I miss them… they were so good.

Because they’re supposed to be “fun”. Just like the candy you’re might be giving out for halloween, they’re “fun size”. They’re like a quarter the size of a regular candy bar, wtf is fun about that. Fun size would be a candy bar the size of my keyboard.

RedPowerLady's avatar

@poofandmook Yep that’s it! Good memory. I miss those too.

@Ansible1 Fun size would be a candy bar the size of my keyboard.

I agree!

I like them because I can’t eat a lot at one time and so I just will it one or two and then take the others to go. There are popular in my mind because I feel like they were made for especially for me!

These are the original sliders. http://whitecastle.com/
Lilttle square burgers, fried in onions, served on little buns. My mom relates that she remembered when they were 6 for a quarter. Now 52 cents each….
YUMMY

It is White castle. The others are just posers.
That especially goes for you, Krystal Burger.

I never heard of any of this stuff. Sounds stupid. Kinda like Coke in 8 oz cans, which costs more than Coke in 12 oz cans. But since the 8 oz cans have “less calories” (because they’re missing 4 ounces), you have these idiots that buy it. Even though it costs more.

galileogirl's avatar

There might be a number of reasons to order them.

1. They are new and new is better
2 Less calories and fat per unit
3. The better to sharem

they’re also popular for restaurants, I imagine, because they can get away with shoving more cheap, empty carbs at us for more money. Don’t think for a second though, that I didn’t get an immense craving for the pulled pork sliders at Bubba Gump’s the second I read this. But then again, after I eat two, I pick the buns off the rest and just eat the pork. :x

So do people actually eat sliders while sober and not hungover?

IBERnineD's avatar

because they are easy to eat, and not to big. People think they are eating less. It’s like mini muffins!

MacBean's avatar

As @IBERnineD pointed out, they’re easier to eat and it makes people think they’re eating less so they actually end up eating more. Major win for the the company.

Supacase's avatar

Amen, @ChazMaz! White Castle is the [gut] bomb (and totally worth it). Krystal and everyone else are poor imitators.

@RedPowerLady My husband talks about those mini chicken sandwiches on rolls from KFC way more than they should naturally enter normal conversation. He was particularly fond of them.

Clair's avatar

I think it’s so funny that they’re now called sliders. I have always called them sliders because they ‘slid’ right through you. And I thought I was clever…

MacBean's avatar

@Clair “Now”? They’ve been called sliders since my grandparents were young…

Clair's avatar

@MacBean (I’m always late with the good ideas…sigh)

MacBean's avatar

@Clair I have the same issue. When I was very little, I came up with werewolves all by myself. I was heartbroken to discover they were actually not my original idea. XD

some people believe size does not matter

Little food is cute. The Burger King commercial addressed it when the women all fawned over the guy with the burger shots. It’s the gastronomic equivalent of baby animals. (or maybe that’s veal…)

poofandmook's avatar

@zephyr826: I had an ex insist that women find everything that’s miniature cute. He said, “I could put a tiny turd in the middle of the floor and you would think it was cute”

jaketheripper's avatar

@poofandmook I’ve found that to be somewhat true as well

sjmc1989's avatar

@jaketheripper and @poofandmook My mom would by the little tiny cans of cokes and the really small bags of popcorn for no better reason than she thought they were so cute and petite looking.

poofandmook's avatar

@sjmc1989: I also think the tiny cans of soda are adorable >.<

sjmc1989's avatar

@poofandmook I said my mom likes them but I really do to :)
