How dirty do you think Netflix movies are?

Asked by pinkparaluies (1888points) November 5th, 2009

I mean literally. Filthy.
Could you imagine the germs on a netflix package / DVD? Has anyone else ever thought about this?

Germs are great, I’m glad they exist.

Great, thanx for ruining Netflix for me. ~

pinkparaluies's avatar

@RedPowerLady Lol sorry. But every time I rent a particularly nerdy movie I think about the filthy teenage boy who probably had this DVD sitting in his room for a week :P

Samurai's avatar

@pinkparaluies Probably nerdy girls too.

Library books are dirty too

pinkparaluies's avatar

@PretentiousArtist But they smell wonderful. mmm

I don’t think Netflix does porn.

Sarcasm's avatar

I don’t even want to imagine how dirty porn dvds get.

They get a lot less handling than the knobs on a public door, the handrails in a public stairway, and the latches on the common restroom stall (before the hands are washed). I just touch them by the edges. As a happy Netflix customer for seven years now, I imagine I’ve picked up fewer contaminants from all the hundreds of Netflix discs I’ve rented than I’ve acquired in a single airplane ride.

Maybe this is how h1n1 is really being carried around ;)

Germs will find you no matter where you go. Better to just live like a normal person and not worry about such trivial things. But hell… people that do worry about such things have apparently spent all kinds of money on this germ killing gell crap that you find everywhere now. The funny part is that some of the nastier stuff isn’t killed by these products… what are they killed by? Warm water and soap.

pinkparaluies's avatar

I’m not worrying about it. Its just something I wondered if other people thought about.
good googily moogily

@pinkparaluies Sorry, I didn’t mean for that to sound like a direct response to you. It was just my soap box moment toward the general public.. not directed at you. =D

Sooo many reasons for rubber gloves

Maybe they hit ‘em with some sanitizer every once in a while. It would be interesting to know for sure. But then again it was never an issue with Blockbuster. We come in contact with billions of germs from every counter we touch to every doorknob we turn. Think too hard about it and you’ll lose your mind and never leave the house.

I never thought about that. Kinda gross. But it reminded me that I have a copy of one of the Harry Potter layin around waiting for me to watch that I’m paying $8 a month for. Total now wasted on movie: $32. Hope it’s good!

Completely clean and sanitary. But then again I use the instant download movies. ;)

But…I would be concerned if the Barbarella DVD was sticky. :P

I was just thinking about this when I rented a movie from our local movie store. I felt dirty after touching the case. It had dirt and sticky stuff on it. What could the person possibly have been doing to make the case sticky?

@ItalianPrincess1217
Oh I know you didn’t just ask that question..~_~

You’ve never combined popcorn with chocolate?

There are far more germs encountered every time you purchase something and receive change back. Money is one of the germiest things you will encounter usually on a daily basis. And don’t forget the door handles and such as Jeruba pointed out.

Somehow Netflix DVDS just aren’t that high on the list compared to the stuff we encounter each day in the ordinary course of our lives.

Jeruba's avatar

@ItalianPrincess1217, have you never noticed how much goo a seven-year-old with a piece of candy can spread?

MrItty's avatar

If you’re handling a Netflix DVD in some way that there’s a significant amount of contact between disk and skin… you’re doing something wrong.

Among the things you’ll encounter every day and put your hands all over without thinking about it:
door handles/knobs
elevator buttons
dollar bills & coins
restaurant silverware & glassware (you have no idea how well they’re cleaned)
stairway railings
receipts
etc
