As an adult, do you continue to use the same brand products that your parents bought during your childhood?

Asked by RealEyesRealizeRealLies (30954points) November 9th, 2009

I use a name brand antiperspirant. As a child, it only came in one flavor, but currently it’s listed as “original scent” to distinguish it from the 15 others like “ocean breeze”, “musk” or “beach patrol”...

Same thing with tooth paste and toilet paper. Yes the originals are still available but they are sometimes hard to find amidst the plethora of new sparkle jells and designer quilts.

Just give me the old stuff and I’m happy. I’ll sometimes mistakenly pick up one of the alternate varieties but never do I find it as comfortable as the original. Plus the shopping is laborious just trying to find the originals within the expanded brand… even more so amongst the competing brands.

Often I wish there was a store area called “Classic Brands” where a shopper could quickly find the old favorites and be on their way. Let the rest of the store hold the “New & Improved” and I’ll enter that area if and when the need arises.

I feel like shopping takes 10 times longer because traipsing through the variety is a complete drudgery these days.

I only have one – paper towels. It must be Bounty or I don’t buy it. I wish I could still find UltraBrite toothpaste, though.

Otherwise, I try different brands until I find something that I like. If it works the way I want it to, I’m a pretty loyal customer.

I tend to just buy whatever is the cheapest with most little things like toothpaste and deodorant. There are some thing, however, that I have to buy specifically even if it’s more expensive because of the quality or results I get from it.

Occasionally, I think about products from my childhood era. I had an aunt who always had that large aromatic green bar of Palmolive on the sink. I loved it and loved the smell. I do not think it is made any more.

Now I have to go look for it! LOL

virtualist's avatar

Damn ! They DO exist; bulk boxed 12packages of 3 bars each for only ~$40

Cupcake's avatar

No. I buy based on price, environmental/household impact, quality and fragrance.

Yes! It’s not like I haven’t tried other brands but I do like some of things I grew up with such as:

Tom’s Of Maine Fennel flavored toothpaste

Noxema face cream

A particular soap bar that smells like almond/milk

Quilted Northern toilet tissue

used to BV Cabernet

Mahatma long grain rice

Yoplait yogurts- had these for the first time as a kid in Canada and they tasted much different, better.

@virtualist

Bulk purchase – $40
Shipping – $6
Reliving a good childhood memory – Priceless!

@hungryhungryhortence

Tom’s of Maine… gawd we put the same things in our mouths…? hmmm…

Facade's avatar

No, I don’t.

I hate when companies change the product with no indication. Makes me think they’re trying to bait and switch… a bit of the old hook and crook.

Some. Whether I keep or change depends on if my requirements have changed or if there are better performing products in that category. There are some things I buy in bulk or store brands that were not available when I was a kid.

tedibear's avatar

@hungryhungryhortence – if I were to take a guess, I would say that your yogurt that now tastes different is made with either Aspartame or HFCS.

Hmm. Nope. I don’t buy nearly as many packaged items as Auntie would buy. No Campbell’s or Hefty or Cream of Wheat. No Kraft Mac n’ Cheese, no Heinz. No General Mills products. No Jiffy cornbread or biscuit mixes! I don’t like cornbread and I make biscuits from scratch when I make them. I think I may have a box of Bisquick in the fridge (she never had anything in the pantry with Uncle Ben or Aunt Jemima on it out of principle). Not sure, though. And she never bought Hellman’s, which is the mayo I use now.

It’s all the store’s brand or generic or fresh. Or Dreamfield’s for pasta, when I can find it.

Only once in a while out of nostalgia.

@virtualist I was going to mention Palmolive, too! I rarely buy it, but every now and then I will buy the original scent because it takes me back to my grandma’s kitchen. Her house smelled like Cheer laundry detergent and she always used Colgate. I never buy either of those items.

Only a couple of things: Scott toilet tissue (the rolls do last longer), Crest toothpaste, Hellman’s or Best Foods Mayonnaise (depending on where I am), and Quaker Oats Old Fashioned Oats.

I have switched brands on a few things for various reasons, including taste and price, and I no longer use margarine if I can help it. It’s either real butter or no fat at all. I also now buy acidophilus milk, but my parents would have when I was growing up if it had been available.

I have also discovered that my childhood favorites no longer taste very good. Either they have changed or I have, or both. An example is Campbell’s Tomato Soup – that stuff is way too sweet.

I almost forgot – I never buy Spam. I had to eat way too much when I was a kid.

tedibear's avatar

I forgot that one – Hellmann’s mayo is the only one that crosses my threshold.

Darwin's avatar

@tedibear39 – Blue Plate is good, but you can’t usually find it outside of New Orleans.

tedibear's avatar

@Darwin – As long as there’s no sweetness involved, I can deal with it! Miracle Whip is foul and Kraft mayo has a hint of sweetness, too. Sugar on my turkey? Blech!

Darwin's avatar

Blue Plate is not sweet and has absolutely no resemblance to Miracle Whip.

tedibear's avatar

Good to know. If I ever make it to Nawlins, I will look for it!

@RealEyesRealizeRealLies – sorry! here’s your thread back. :-)

Sarcasm's avatar

Nope.
I’m part of the “starving college student” demographic. I buy the store brand versions of anything I can. I don’t ever find store-brand toothpaste, so I pick that at random.

aprilsimnel's avatar

@Darwin, Just like the Python boys, I reckon, during and after the war. “I DON’T LIKE SPAM!” I’ve only had Span a couple of times. Blah.

I forgot about toiletries. I do use Lubriderm and CetapHil and Crest toothpaste and floss (apparently, they bought Glide). I tried Tom’s of Maine, but I couldn’t get used to the taste.

RealEyesRealizeRealLies's avatar

@Darwin

I almost hate to admit it, but I really like Spam… and remember Sizzelean..? Don’t know what it is about it, but I like it. Kind of reminds me of the meat stuff in Jack in the Box tacos, of which I can’t get enough of. What is that meat stuff?

That said, I do not like beef jerky, though it seems I should.

Darwin's avatar

I remember Sizzelean being advertised, but by that point in my life my parents had enough money to buy real food.

For me now Spam is way too salty. I no longer cook with any added salt and only rarely add salt at the table, so I have probably adjusted my taste for salt. In any case, I have enough money that I can afford real meat now.

Coke and Squirt glass bottles chilled in a tub of ice and water , sold at the old local gas station is definitely untouchable.

Also still have old not-empty flasks of Old Spice and English Leather aftershave.

My old Stetson is still on the top shelf of my closet.

hungryhungryhortence's avatar

@tedibear39: it’s true about the sweetener and also the yogurt didn’t have food coloring when I was a kid, just chunks of fruit in there.

galileogirl's avatar

Very few brands from my childhood are still around and those that are still around have totally different ingredients.

Quaker Oats-but not quick or instant
Chiquita banana
Jello
C&H sugar
Campbell soup
Kool-Aid-OK I drink Crystal-light now
Skippy peanut butter
Coke-in 7 oz bottles

Tide
