If the toaster catches on fire, is it still safe to eat the food that was toasting?

Asked by rangerr (15765points) November 24th, 2009

I may or may not have left the room when a toaster strudel was in the toaster.
It may or may not have been on fire when I came back.

I unplugged it, put it out with a wet towel yeah, I wasn’t gonna use a fire extinguisher on my food then flipped it over to get the toaster strudel out.

It didn’t burn the food too badly (the corner of it is pretty crispy, but the rest looks fine one the toaster ash was brushed off)

So.. can I still eat it?

Yes. But quickly.

I would be more concerned about finding out why your toaster caught fire than eating the damn strudel.

rangerr's avatar

@NewZen Yessssss!

@holden I’m leaving that part to my mother. I’m a jerk. I know.

Lol, just eat the damn thing!

eat it, if you survive (or don’t end up in a hospital) we will know is safe and we can use this questions as further reference :)

I’m still alive so far and still hungry.

What, you have a wooden toaster?

avvooooooo's avatar

So… Microwave a hot pocket and try not to blow up the microwave.

Your mom is gonna be mad.

CMaz's avatar

Sure, if you like the taste of burnt plastic and electrical parts.

@AstroChuck When I said toaster ash, I meant..well. I don’t know what I meant.
@avvooooooo Pizza has been ordered.
@chyna Yeah, she’s pissed.

I like the whole plausible deniability aspect of your question.

@Bluefreedom Yeah, I think she should be thinking about law school down the road. Or politics. :D

@rangerr Hey, its better to find out than have it short somehow when nobody’s around and burn down the house! At least that’s what you can say!

If you eat a burning thtwudel thwowly, you may end up tawking with a funny wisp.

the power of Christ compels your toaster!

@rangerr I’m late to the question and I’m on tenterhooks. Did you eat it? Was it any good?

rangerr's avatar

@janbb Yes, I ate it. Yes, it was good.

janbb's avatar

Good – I’m one for eating anything salvageable. I do draw the line at mold though.

…toaster catches on fire, is it still safe to eat the food…

Do you grill or BBQ?
Well, the food you were fixing was on fire…

rangerr's avatar

@boffin I thought about that, but I wasn’t sure if a toaster was different or not.. I figured grills were made for that.. toasters, not so much.

boffin's avatar

@rangerr
It’s bread…Scrape some of that black stuff off and eat it…
Besides a bit of “Carbon” won’t hurt you…

rangerr's avatar

@boffin I’m gonna fail this conversation either way. Shutting up now.

@rangerr
No No, lets just toss the Toaster and the Bread.
Get another toaster, or return the defective one.
Better yet since we as a society are so litigious maybe we can find a lawyer who will sue Black and Decker, or GE for the faulty toaster.
The if you won you would have lots of BREAD to BURN…

In general, stay away from food that looks really black. Carcinogenic nitrosamines form when grilling meat too intensely for example and they are more of a problem than completely burning carbohydrates.
