Why don't we like change?

Asked by Blackknight999 (303points) December 14th, 2009

Why do we all resent change even though after the storming it often seems like it was for the best?

Well if I knew the answer to that question I would have made a fortune writing management and leadership business books.

What is familiar to some is comfortable, I would think.

The only thing certain is change.

It demands mental energy.

Even in normal times, we’re constantly having to update our cognitive maps to keep them in agreement with reality. But these little tweaks are easy; they don’t usually require a massive overhaul of our maps. But when some big change happens, we have to expend a lot of mental energy adjusting to the new reality and all of its implications.

Change often implies loss.

It makes us anxious and we feel a loss of control.

Naturally, the human species is afraid of the outcome to anything, for fear of a negative side-effect. Conclusively, I think that maybe the human species is afraid of change because it is in fact evolution. Could it be that we are too evolved and would like to stay that way? I don’t know. I think we don’t fully understand the benefits (pros vs cons) altogether.

Change is natural. Fear is natural. Flying cars? Now that’s scientific!!!

I think some people don’t like change because, for them exclusively, they were benefitting or liked things the way they were. If someone isn’t benefitting from the current system, they will be in favor of change.
