Do you feed your pets table scraps?

Asked by Morgan1 (203points) December 14th, 2009

If you do, do you give them the pieces you wouldn’t eat, or do you give them something special just because?

never.people food isn’t meant for them and does more damage than good.

aprilsimnel's avatar

::hangs head:: I admit it. I’ve given my roommates’ dog a slice of cooked bacon. I had to! She gave me the “big eyes” routine! And it only ever happened once!

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

Not usually. The dog never gets them. The 2 cats try.One of my them has taken his paw and tried to guide my fork into his mouth!!

Fernspider's avatar

On occasion, if I am eating eye fillet, I will cut off a few pieces for him as a treat. Much to my partners disgust ($36.00 per kilo meat). lol

I would give my partner yummy things more often if he was a cute as our puppy!

Taciturnu's avatar

Nope, never. He eats raw anyway, so he eats “people food” all the time.

moonchild's avatar

Oh yeah, a German Shepherd with a good appetite, he loves pizza etc, but he is not allowed around the table when we are eating and he is given food from the table that I know won`t disrupt his system.

Yes, my cats love clam dip and once when my cat Kasey was a little kitten I left my hamburger on the table and he took a huge bite out of it. I’m careful about what I allow them to have, but if it’s a bit of salmon, chicken or turkey, there really isn’t a problem giving it to them. No sugar for any pets and you’re typically fine. Besides with my messy brother they’d eat table food anyway, I have to clean the floor and his chair after he eats.

therookie's avatar

yes pasta, and eggs, and pizza curst.

The vet had said to break form the begging routine give a her a pice of hot pepper. I did that and that silly dog like hot peppers, go figure.

curlysue's avatar

Yes,i know you arent supposed too.just a tiny piece.

gradyjones's avatar

I used to because it seemed like it was wasteful to throw out something left on my plate when I had to feed the dog anyway. I didn’t know at the time how bad it is for dogs to eat table scraps. I have since stopped but it is much harder now to not give him something because he still expects it, and he begs for it. and he knows I am a pushover

Clair's avatar

Very very rarely. I make them their own healthy treats so I still feel like I’m doing something special for them. They get the best of everything, spoiled assholes. Their shampoo and conditioner costs more than mine and their small bag of organic food? $20. They aren’t neglected, contrary to what they’d have you believe.

chyna's avatar

@aprilsimnel Shame on you! Bad roommate. No, I don’t give my dog people food. It can ruin their coats and make them fat if overfed which would cause health issues.

The only pet we currently have is a rabbit, and yes, he sometimes gets table scraps. If one of the kids has a leftover apple slice or a baby carrot, the rabbit gets it. He also likes Cheerios, but only gets a couple at a time, once or twice a week (not with milk, of course). These kinds of table scraps are really good for him, so I don’t feel bad about it. He gets other veggies as well as his rabbit food and timothy hay. Spoiled little guy!

When I was a kid, we always had several cats and at least two dogs. We were all really bad about giving them table scraps. A bite here and there, not a whole bowl or anything. We had a couple of dogs who were great at catching bits of food we’d throw to them. They probably got more people food just because it was fun for us kids to see them snap a bite of meat right out of the air. My mom and dad even used to give them steak bones to gnaw on, until our collie had to have surgery for bone bits lodged in his intestines. After that, no bones for the dogs.

The cats didn’t get as much in the way of people food, but I do remember one cat in particular (my all time favorite, and I still miss him) who would sit on the table while I ate my cereal each morning. He’d stare at me, and place his paw on my hand just to remind me he was there. If I ignored him too much, he’d let his claws out a bit. He always got to lick the last bit of milk from the bowl. His name was Slash, and he was so cool that if he were still around I’d cave in and let him lick the bowl again!

If we had cats or dogs of our own now, I’d be much more careful than my parents were about giving them people food. I’m sure once in a while I’d give in and toss out a little treat here and there, but for the most part I think I’d follow the “rules.”

aprilsimnel's avatar

@chyna, I know, but honestly, I only did it once. 4 years ago.

Clair's avatar

I do kind of the same thing as @MissAusten, My oldest dog gets veggies like beans and carrots and whatnot. (Avoiding onions, of course!) My youngest does not though because he hasn’t fully been potty trained yet.

I was at a friend’s house today for lunch. She has an adorable new kitty. When I turned my head away from the table and then back, the kitten was dragging the remains (c. half) of my grilled cheese sandwich away.

I do buy organic cheese and give Milo a few small crumbs, about the size of petits pois. As I am taking the package out of the fridge, Milo starts to vocalize non-stop. And I find him, face down, in my almost empty bowls of veggie soup, particularly if they have some milk or cream.

Clair's avatar

@gailcalled It’s hard to deny that. You know it makes them feel so special.

gailcalled's avatar

@Clair: Until I grow eyes in the back of my head, it is impossible to prevent. Cats apparently make no noise when they creep around. Sometimes I take a step backwards and trip over Milo when, a second ago, he had been on another floor.

azlotto's avatar

No…I got fish.

chyna's avatar

@aprilsimnel Ok, as long as you learned your lesson. :)

It is not bad to feed table scraps to your dog if it is not too fatty or sugar laden. For 100’s of years before commercial dog food (which is made out of the scraps that isn’t fit to be people food) became popular, cheap and easy, all dogs and cats survived on scraps.

The current and I think healthful nutrition trend for humans is to avoid processed foods, but now that every vet sells dog food, they are going in the complete opposite direction and saying feed your dog this crap in the bag that is made out of garbage and sprayed with fat to make it palatable, also dyed so humans think it looks better and loaded with preservatives!

It doesn’t make sense to me?????

Clair's avatar

@rooeytoo I feel the same way. It’s unacceptable to me that people say how they care for their animals and feed their dogs ‘Main Ingredient: Processed corn by-product artifical McUnhealthy Death By Diarrhea.’ And the sad thing is most vets recommend it. It’s disgusting to me. I if wouldn’t eat it, I don’t want my babies to and I try to avoid processed foods as much as possible.

rooeytoo's avatar

@Clair – exactly how I feel. And now the vets are selling the same stuff in a different bag and charging twice as much. It’s crazy. Dogs were healthier, skinnier, had better teeth and less skin and ear infections when they were eating real food.

gailcalled's avatar

Curious. My vets never push any dry dog or cat food (or wet either, for that matter). They ask me about my animal’s diet, but since Milo is a lean, mean, sleek, shiny, fighting machine, we figure I must be doing something right.

Vets like the idea of a dog eating an occasional rabbit, fur and all, or a cat eating mouse parts. The vets think that the hair and fur is good for their digestive tract. No problems here, I think. Milo got 49 rodents this summer, from a baby mouse about 1” long to a sturdy-looking chipmunk.

chyna's avatar

@gailcalled You are such a proud mom!

faye's avatar

@gradyjones read what is in the expensive can of dog food stew. Exactly what you or I would put in stew!! Manufactured pet food has only been around about 60 years because some smart guy talked people out of giving their pets real food, and into chicken meal and soy by-products. Shake your heads!!!

ccrow's avatar

@faye the ‘smart guys’ were figuring out how to make money off the stuff they couldn’t feed to people!! I’m lucky, my vet is supportive of me feeding a raw diet & doesn’t push the stuff they sell.
I do give the occasional ‘treat’ of my food, such as a bite of toast at breakfast, or chicken skin & gristle; more often the treat is just the privilege of licking the plate. Two of my dogs beg for carrot when I’m preparing the parrot’s dish, & I give them some.

faye's avatar

And I had a cat live to 19 yrs eating a cut of beef liver every day.
my dog likes cabbage!! but then there is the evening, and its really cold here right now!! @ccrow Exactly!! What do some people think dogs ate 100 yrs ago??

Fernspider's avatar

One night I was cooking dinner for my partner and I (stir-fried chicken and veges). I turned by back for a few minutes to answer the phone and when I returned Arnie (our cat) was munching into the dinner straight out of the frying pan! Grrrr.

I did still eat the dinner and served it up to my partner, hee hee. Shhhh, our secret, K?!

gailcalled's avatar

My tender and sensitive sister began to prepare, daily, special (organic) foods for her two dogs, who were aging and arthritic. They go so fat that the vet had to tell my sis to limit their food supply.

If you live in a free-range, rodent-laden and sparsely populated (with humans) area like I do, you let your dogs/cats forage at the outdoor buffet and then supplement.

@Syz owned a cat once who showed up with a large fried breast of chicken…not, apparently from Syz’s grill.

moonchild's avatar

@ faye, that is unbelievable, 19 years is very old….our dog loves carrots, we did have rabbits and I couldn`t give them a carrot without him too, he feels the need to share in everything, lol

downtide's avatar

My dog occasionally gets table scraps and leftovers, but she’s never fed from the table – the scraps always go in her bowl with her regular food.

moonchild's avatar

That is very important downtide, that the dog knows that they are getting something special, but they also need their special place to eat it.

Utta_J's avatar

No, well not all the time once in a blue moon is okay but dont make it a habit. please remember that their food is the best thing for them because it has everything they need.

moonchild's avatar

Absolutely Utta.

rooeytoo's avatar

Poor dogs, spending their life eating garbage dyed to make it look palatable, laced with preservatives so it never ever ever rots and then sprayed with fat to make it taste good to a hungry dog who has no choice but to eat it.

My dogs would probably run away from home.

moonchild's avatar

My dog always has the choice, believe me, if he doesn`t want something then he wont eat it, I remember buying a very big sack of dried food as it was going cheaper by the kilo, he wouldn`t touch it, I ended up giving it to a friend who has a dog and hers loved it.

Scooby's avatar

Yep!! My cats are always fed scraps if it involves left over chicken, beef or fish even cheese! :-/
They also love pizza too, it always goes in their own bowl first mind ya! :-/

Hey, Scooby :)
