Did your High School have a nurse? A guidance counsellor?

Asked by nicobanks (2926points) December 15th, 2009

I remember when I was in grade 9, a student raised his hand and said he wasn’t feeling well and maybe he should go see the nurse. The teacher’s response: an incredulous “There’s no nurse!” And I remember a few years later, I made an appointment with the school counsellor, I don’t remember what my issue was specifically but it was something personal, and I remember starting to explain my problem and the counsellor interrupting me, “Umm, I’m not really here for that, I’m here for academic guidance.” But on TV there’s always a school nurse and people are always going to the school counsellor for personal problems! What was it like for you?

My school had a nurse but not really counselors, for non academic schedule issues at least, though there was an integration counselor who I remember fondly whining to about a bunch of pointless crap that bothered me.

10,000 years ago when i was in high school we had a nurse that we called “the grey lady” (i don’t know why we called her this) i don’t remember us having any type of counsellor…

Yes there was a nurse. We were very low-income school but there was still a nurse.

We also had “school counselors”. And yes their primary job is academic guidance. However I happen to know they also dealt with personal issues that revolved around school such as school bullying or student drug use affecting their grades, that type of thing. Other issues are supposed to be referred to local agencies, so they shouldn’t just say “this isn’t my job” they should refer you to an appropriate resource.

We had a nurse.
We also had guidance counselors who were there for academic as well as personal issues.
We had a shitty year my senior year and lost quite a few students, so they had professional counselors come in for us to talk to.
There was also a school resource officer who was not only the school cop, but he dealt with the harassment, and drugs and anything along those lines.
We also had a peer mentoring teacher who was always available to talk to.

I don’t know if there was a school nurse as I was never in NEED of one; I’m thinking there probably WAS, though! But there was ALWAYS a “guidance counselor”!

Our school didn’t have nurses, but we had a teacher who also doubled as a guidance counselor.

I thought every school was supposed to have a nurse and a councellor. Maybe I assumed that because I went to school in a big city.

One nurse (who happened to be the mayor’s mother) and a Guidance Department staff of 5 (four counselors, one supervisor). I think theoretically they were there for personal issues as well as academic, but I don’t know anyone who ever went there for any reason other than to choose classes and fill out college & scholarship applications.

Yeah, we had people in those jobs, just as people see them in Hollywood teen movies. I went to a very John Hughes-like high school.

My school had a nurse, an academic guidance counselor, and a counselor for personal issues.

we had both. the school nurse was USELESS.

Mine had a school nurse, and guidance counselors. There were three counselors to each grade. Mine did lots of psychological work with me. We also had a school district psychiatrist.

@deni: Yeah, our nurse was pretty damn useless, too. Sadly, I don’t think that’s very uncommon.

our nurse/secretary person helps us
not that i needed or wanted it but i cut my wrist really bad and she bandaged it
it was scary and embarrassing but she was very nice.

School nurses are usually poorly paid. It’s weird though, in most states they need a specific education just to be a school nurse…it’s not just a regular RN.

one time i was in my high school during the summer for a photography class thing they were doing, and i noticed that the school nurses were on hand, as were the secretaries. my friends and i laughed for hours at the thought of the nurses being on duty in case a fight broke out over an intense tournament of solitaire, since thats all our secretaries did: play solitaire and complain when someone entered the office

Thanks everyone for your answers. We did have peer mentors but that wouldn’t have appealed to me at the time, I wouldn’t have considered it. It was a fairly large high school in a medium-sized city. It was a regular district-school as well as a magnet school for arts students and disabled students, so there was a fairly large student base; and as far as funding went we were comparatively-speaking well-off, and well-known for arts and academics. I kind of expected everyone to answer this question with “no that’s just on TV,” ha!

Our highschool had a nurse, who was an RN. Her son was a buddy of mine. He went on to become a professional trumpet player somewhere around New York City. My highschool guidance counselor turned up at a local feed mill, working after school retirement. He and I now live 120 miles from our highschool!
