Did you buy your wedding dress off the rack?

Asked by Taciturnu (6045points) December 21st, 2009

My sister decided yesterday she wants to get married 01.02.2010— Yours truly is planning. First stop has to be to find a dress, but I know special orders won’t be done in time. Did you buy your dress of the rack? How did it work out for you? Was there a good savings in doing so? Thanks. :)

I not only bought my dress of the rack, I got it a clearance sale from a bridal shop that was going out of business. It cost me $200, of course that was in 1987.

We wore shorts and t shirts. The JP in North Carolina could have cared less, hehehehe.

Went to a wedding that was put together in 2 weeks, and the bride bought 2 dresses in that time period—first from J. Crew, which she returned, and the second from Macy’s clearance rack, which she had altered at the dry cleaner’s. She looked lovely. The maid of honor wore a dress that she wore in another wedding, and the groom and best man bought new dark suits from Brooks Brothers. They had the wedding on a Sunday, got a great deal on a phototgrapher, flowers, etc. The reception was a sit down dinner for 50 at a 4 star restaurant, with a string quartet from the University. Her mom said the whole thing cost $3500.00

ADD: There were some deals to be had on www.shopgoodwill.com on wedding dresses NWT.

I did… it was on a sale rack at a bridal shop. It was pretty nice too!

Got one made for my wife and was well worth it (she looked sooo good) But I see time is an issue for you, it took over a year (maybe 15 months) for my wife’s dress to be made.

I actually tried to purchase the one off the rack but the consultant strongly advised against it. I’m not sure why…I was fine with the fact that it had already been tried on and used a bit. It wasn’t dirty. I assume she just didn’t want to sell me a discounted dress instead of a brand new, full priced dress. I think you should be just fine with buying a dress off the rack though. Lots of people do it.

You bet I did. Great price. Great wedding. Dildo husband.

Thanks everyone. :)

This is a big deal for her, so I want to try to make it as close to her ideal as possible.

@PandoraBoxx Thanks for the tips, we will check out those spots as well.
@RareDenver Mine was made, too. I loved it, but it kinda leaves me clueless in this scenario.
@ItalianPrincess1217 It would make sense that she would want a higher commission. I assume you ended up having one made?

@Sueanne_Tremendous: I think you mean “ditto.” If not, then…..well that’s interesting.

PandoraBoxx's avatar

If the wedding is in two weeks (January 2nd, 2010, right?), you have no choice but retail, unless a family member or friend has a dress for her to wear, as “something borrowed.”

After visiting several bridal shops and trying on some ridiculous dresses, I found a dress I fell in love with at a bridal consignment shop. The dress had actually never been worn, and I had the alterations done at the same shop. The dress was about $300. The veil had a long train and cost almost as much as the dress. :0

We had a shotgun wedding and planned everything in six weeks. I don’t think the alterations took that entire time. Two weeks, maybe? I loved the dress, and can’t imagine having one more perfect if I’d spent a year looking. :)

I had a good friend of my mother’s make my wedding dress. That was years ago and it was less than $150.

Taciturnu's avatar

@PandoraBoxx Yes, you’re right. I wouldn’t have thought of department stores, though. Nice pointer. :)

@MissAusten I’m happy it all worked out so well for you!! I don’t know that we have any official “bridal consignment” shoppes, but we did discuss the possibility of looking into consignment shoppes. If we did have a bridal one, that would make it all the easier!

@pearls How fortunate to have that. I’m sure the thought of her making it will stay with you forever.

pearls's avatar

@taciturnu Yes, I was fortunate in that respect, but unfortunate in that the marriage didn’t last. Well, maybe I was fortunate it didn’t last.

I was married in a civil ceremony in a beautiful white dress with a beaded bodice that we bought on a huge discount for $37.50 at Dillards. It was orginally about a $300 dress. It was perfect. Couldn’t have gotten something better if I’d had it custom made. I couldn’t wait for the dancing to start at the reception so I could change clothes though! I wanted to get married in Vegas but my mom had a fit. So we had a nice civil ceremony and a beautiful reception. I didn’t want a big wedding.

Taciturnu's avatar

@pearls Sometimes, it IS a blessing when it doesn’t last…
@knitfroggy What a bargain!! My sister’s wedding isn’t going to be very large either- she’s thinking about 40 guests at this point.

pearls's avatar

@taciturnu I was blessed with three children from that marriage.

Taciturnu's avatar

@pearls Then you came out with quite a lot. :)

laureth's avatar

I bought mine from a website. Perhaps they had a rack there. But the point remains – I spent about $100 on a dress skirt/tunic that I’ve worn lots of times since, because it’s not white and lace. Yay.

PandoraBoxx's avatar

What size does your sister wear?

Taciturnu's avatar

@laureth Interestingly, my sister is considering a green dress.
@pandora Depends a little, but roughly a 6.

PandoraBoxx's avatar

She should be an easy alteration then. Often you can get a great deal on a sample dress off the rack that they use for fitting. I think most of those are size 8’s. @knitfroggy‘s suggestion of Dillard’s is a good one; they have some lovely dresses online for under $300.

laureth's avatar

My wedding clothes were green, too! :)
They came from here.

Taciturnu's avatar

@laureth That is so funny! I will pass that along to her.

@PandoraBoxx You’re so helpful, really. Wish I could say it enough. Seems you’re thinking about it and coming back for more each time. :)

PandoraBoxx's avatar

@taciturnu, I’m of an age where my friends’ daughters are starting to get married. How not to spend $20,000 on a wedding is of great interest to me. And we need to get a new TV, so I have few distractions. :-)

Taciturnu's avatar

@PandoraBoxx I spent $8000 on mine almost 4 years ago, for 75 people. We were trying to save for a house and didn’t want to drain our accounts. Not the end of the world, but considering what I got out of it? I think it was a bargain. My sister’s budget is far less, as she already drained her account buying the house! lol

I recently read about this site in the New York Times. Looks pretty cool.

Taciturnu's avatar

Awesome, @La_chica_gomela! What a novel idea!

Sueanne_Tremendous's avatar

@hannahsugs : Nope. You read it correctly: He was and still is, by all accounts, a dildo.

rooeytoo's avatar

I think that could go either way, do you mean it as an insult or a compliment??? ;- )

RareDenver's avatar

@rooeytoo trust me, calling someone a dildo is never a compliment

when I was younger people at school called each other dildo if they were being stupid, I called my dad it once, he made me look it up in the dictionary, I was surprised to say the least

rooeytoo's avatar

@RareDenver – I looked at the dictionary in my mac just to see the official definition. There were 2, lots of males would probably relish the first, but you are right, the 2nd is not flattering, heheheh!

MissAusten's avatar

@RareDenver When I was talking to my dad once, I called my brother a prick. My dad didn’t say anything, but later my mom took me aside to explain what it meant, ask where I heard it, and suggest I remove that word from my vocabulary. What I did instead was make sure I knew what a word meant before I used it, especially in front of my parents.
