Asked by jca (36062points) December 22nd, 2009

i have been using this lady’s services for about 2 years. last year i gave her a $30 gift card. my daughter goes to her 3 days a week while i work. i am wondering if my gift last year was appropriate or i should give her more? or less?

If you can afford it, I would bump it up to 50.

Here is what the Kiplinger newsletter says for holiday tipping for the babysitter:

“BABY SITTER
How much to tip: Nanny or au pair—one week’s pay and a small gift from the child; regular sitter—one to two nights’ pay; day-care provider—$25 to $70.
Exceptions: Only give a holiday tip if you’ve frequently used the sitter during the year or you had to call on them in an 11th hour emergency, advises Thomas Blaikie, etiquette expert and author of “To the Manner Born.””

Another $30 gift card and homemade cookies and a bottle of wine.

I think the amount you gave is fair. But, like @ubersiren says, also give her another gift like the cookies and wine. But only give what you can afford.

IF it is in your budget; $50 would be a nice gesture .. However; in today’s economy , I’m sure that the $30 would be appreciated , also…

Give as much as you can. If there’s anyone in your life to spoil, it’s the person that cares for your child.
