Should I just save up for a new computer?

Asked by jamzzy (885points) January 3rd, 2010

My mom get a used PC from a friend and is giving it to me. I game a lot, and need a computer with a pretty nice video card. The PC my mom got is a Dell dimension, not sure which one it is I think its the 2400. The thing is I need a new video card, but this PC only has a regular PCI slot, not a PCI express….what should I do?

Well I am thankful and was saving up for a new computer, but my mom saw it, took it and said “is it of use to you?” all I wanted to know was if there was a way around this whole PCI crap….not how great it was that my mom got me a computer.

Yeah.. If you only have a PCI slot you are screwed. Don’t bother upgrading. Get a new computer when you can afford it. PCI video cards will struggle with modern games.

I like computers, I would goof around with it. Install Linux maybe. Re-install Windows if you have the disks. Set up a home network.

Agreed. I used to have a Dimension and it wasn’t all that fast period, and even slower once graphics were thrown into the mix. In fact, my netbook does better!

Now, it does just fin on older games like System Shock 2 and Deus Ex, but even Postal 2 makes it groan.

I would never have had a computer, unless my daughter had not left it behind when she moved to Seattle. it was outdated, but it was good enough for me as a beginner. as i progressed with my pc, i, like you, discovered that i needed more that what i was left with. so, i saved and bought what i wanted. you can do the same thing. the good part about saving for something is that you respect it much more, rather than if someone just gave it to you. it makes your pc have more meaning.

thank both people (obviously) and slowly talk about a getting computer-for “x” reasons that don’t include things on this computer, while saving up for a new one. So, if this computer you just gotten doesn’t have the regular disc card thing or whatever, then slowly ease into a conversation about how amazing this game or whatever is then talk ease into how cards “these days” are shaped or whatever differently. Then…..talk about other things, do a little research, ease into “interesting” facts (while still saving up). Eventually, after you have used the computer for a while, talk about some of the “negative” things about this computer, use the “interesting” facts from previous research. Then go into this new computer(the one you’re saving up for) and say ALL positive things about it, things of which the given computer doesn’t include, and then buy it. ( but after you are somewhat or almost positive you’ve convinced them) if this is way too complicated then just ease them into conversation of a new computer or do something else. Anyway….hope this helps from the very little computer knowledge I know.

Keep the donated computer for doing useful things and save up for your dream machine so long as you understand it will quickly be out of date to keep up with the ever growing demands of games.
