Can you lose your sex drive due to birth control.

Asked by bigboss (990points) January 12th, 2010

OK, just curious, have any women on here lost their sex drive due to birth control?
and for those that have lost it and discontinued the use of BC, how long before you regained it?

I have never heard of women losing their sex drive due to the use of birth control.

What kind of birth control? It’s not common, but it can happen on COCs combined oral contraceptives, the kind of birth control pill that has both estrogen and progesterone. The estrogen in the pills can increase SHBG sex hormone binding globulin which binds up testosterone. Testosterone is important for libido in women as well as men.

There are some studies that suggest that the nuvaring might cause less problems with SHBG than the patch or most pills. Some women find that all combined hormone methods interfere with their sex drive.

I tend to have a lower sex drive when on any hormonal birth control. It makes me drier down there, and it’s just overall more uncomfortable, so I don’t have the desire for it.

I prefer to not be on any hormones.
