Do you ever experience a feeling of euphoria as you drink a cup of coffee?

Asked by juniper (1910points) January 22nd, 2010

I don’t know if it’s the massive caffeine intake or what, but I’m often overcome by a feeling of sheer joy as I drink my morning coffee. I’m talking euphoria! Fleeting euphoria, though—it only lasts for about 30 seconds.

Have you ever experienced this feeling? What is it? Is it just the result of me satisfying my addiction?

Just curious!

Not with the coffee, but the first cigarette in the morning has sometimes knocked my socks off. makes me dizzy. i need to quit smoking.

No, but I surely experience euphoria when I take a sip of a well made bloody mary at Sunday brunch.

I never have, although I like coffee every day.I did quit once and had a headache for a week.I enjoyed that, and so did everyone around me ;))

MissAnthrope's avatar

Definitely. I sometimes use coffee mid-day to improve my mood if I’m feeling low and cranky. It’s more than the caffeine fix, it has pretty consistently worked for years, kind of like a liquid anti-depressant.

I did, then I stopped smoking. Now it is just a cup of coffee.

I’m there just at the smell of it. Drinking that first sip of coffee no matter what time of day gives me an instant rush. Ahhhh coffee!!!!

Is this Irish Coffee you’re talking about ??

juniper's avatar

@Pretty_Lilly: Ha! No, just strong drip coffee. No alcohol involved!

I did once driving to work not long ago and drinking my coffee I didn’t realize the lid was loose and got a crotch full of fresh brewed that gave me a feeling that thankfully didn’t last much longer than 30 seconds but it did give me quite the rush!

CMaz's avatar

@Cruiser – Is there anyone that that did not happen to? :-)

Anything you are addicted to will produce euphoria when you get your fix.

I met someone in the elevator who was drinking coffee and complaining about how coffee made him nervous. I said “Why don’t you quit drinking coffee?” He said “Because if I didn’t have the shakes, I wouldn’t get any exercise at all.”

jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities's avatar

Absolutely! It is my only addiction, but I wouldn’t change it for the world.

nevr have but then again i hate coffee. im about the only one in my family or friends that doesnt drink it. ;)

erichw1504's avatar

No, but I do when I take my first sip of Mountain Dew of the day.

kidkosmik's avatar

Maybe not euphoria but definitely a feeling of satisfaction and this morning… relief after the pot was done brewing. :-)

Cruiser's avatar

@ShoulderPadQueen Hot tea or even a poorly managed ice cold soft drink while on the road can give similar euphoric feelings! lol!

With me it is my first cup of tea… the stronger the better… I am British

Agree with @john65pennington. The rush comes with the first cigarette. Two double espressos just take the sleep out of my eyes.

liliesndaisies's avatar

Yes. Reminds me of two things.
Coffee and love—best when they are hot.

aphilotus's avatar

yes. coffee is my hero.

juniper's avatar

Well, I can’t deny that caffeine is my drug of choice. I was riding my coffee high for a loooooong time this morning. It was pretty sweet.

hungryhungryhortence's avatar

Yes, a cup of espresso gets me giddy for a short spell then nicely mellows me out so I don’t have the nerves the rest of the day.

YARNLADY's avatar

I get that feeling from many things. I love to drink a fresh glass of ice water from my refrigerator, that refreshing homemade lemonade with my afternoon snack, a wonderful warm hot cocoa in the evening, a red wine at the peak of flavor with my steak dinner. I’m a real connoisseur of anything liquid, and I do love my fresh brewed morning coffee. I don’t see any of these as being related to addiction/caffeine, but merely pure enjoyment of the moment.

HA! Didn’t notice this question and posted a similar one – I feel the same after my morning coffee but I need music to really get the best kick out of it – euphoria lasts longer and I feel a mix of melancholy and euphoria, this wierd “omg life!” feeling (recommend ELO’s Balance of Power and Time albums lol. And the effect seems to be limited to my first coffee – consecutive ones only make me jittery :S
