Is it possible to try to make no point?

Asked by cockswain (15276points) February 27th, 2010

I was reading something about intent of actions, then about equations that infinitely approach zero, and it suddenly hit me: Is it possible to try to make no point? Is it just a paradox, or could it be tied to something deeper?

Sure. You can definitely try and make no point, and that would be the point.

Some call it “Guilty Talk”. Others call it “Spin”

It happens on fluther all the time. Just stick around and you’ll start to see it.

@cockswain “Is it just a paradox, or could it be tied to something deeper?”

I call it Information Entropy… noise on the line intended to degrade or destroy the intended signal.

Others call it “Lying”.

What would be the point of that? Billiard balls have no point. I suppose that if they did it would be rather pointless. (I could go on all day…)

@DarkScribe . . . I can see it casing many pointed discussions, full of finger pointing that would at some point become pointless, as you stated.

I agree it is pointless to intentionally try to make no point. But philosophically speaking, is it even possible? Zeno’s motion paradox could be argued as pointless (or could it???), yet it’s interesting to consider.

What’s the point here?

Reminds me of a time in College when I was late for an electronics class. I was running by the library, which had a group of students doing some research activity that involved a huge white board and a lot of arrows and underlined words. Well, one of the students was wearing a sweater like the one my aunt used to wear whenever we went out on a family outing to the zoo. She would always laugh and point and try to engage my sisters about how silly the panda or the seal or the monkeys were, but really, it was the giraffs that were a little weird to me.

@filmfann But you tried to make a point that you could try and not make a point

Good question. Lemme tie this onion to my belt before I answer…

Young children will sometimes point to something and say the name of it. Despite my use of the word point in the previous sentence, there is no real point to what they are doing. An adult living in the moment might be able to achieve something similar, just making observations.

Seems like trying to make no point
becomes the point itself.

Sure! Politicians do it all the time!!!

@cockswain Really? Sometimes I just ramble.

To make no point, would be to point others in another direction.

Pointlessness is subjective.

@mattbrowne – Good point!

@ChazMaz – Declaring my previous answer to be utterly pointless might qualify as an oxymoron.

@mattbrowne

That’s exactly my point. The whole thing is a little silly, but I like a good paradox.

I believe this is called rambling. Or somewhat similar to The Dangling Conversation

I just tied my shoelace.
