What's your favorite 90's band?

Asked by squidcake (2639points) March 21st, 2010

As much as everyone else hates it, I absolutely love 90’s music.
I’m talking about The Cranberries, Cardigans, Sixpence None The Richer, Sugar Ray…stuff like that. It was great.

So, which 90’s band do you think was the best as far as good, quality music?
(However, there are some like Hanson, Savage Garden and whatnot that I love despite their music being crap.)

Obviously, Nirvana.

But also Blind Melon, Bush and (please forgive me) Hootie.

HTDC's avatar

Savage Garden’s music was crap? You take that back!

Vunessuh's avatar

Spice Girls.
I still listen to them.

Captain_Fantasy's avatar

Soundgarden has to be right up there.
Rusty Cage? Oh yeah you better believe it.

squidcake's avatar

@HTDC
Don’t worry, I’m an insane Savage Garden fangirl. Especially lately, I’ve been listening to their two albums for hours on end…

….BUT I can still acknowledge that it’s not the greatest music. Hah.

There are so many to choose from. Radiohead, Blur, The Smashing Pumpkins, Weezer. And my personal favourite, The Chemical Brothers.

I don’t care what anyone says, 90’s music was awesome.

kheredia's avatar

I have to say Sublime.. they were late 80s early 90s.. I still listen to their music.

chels's avatar

Seriously?
Way too many.
If I had to pick it would be between Counting Crows, Radiohead and.. Collective Soul?
Then again there is always The Goo Goo Dolls and Third Eye Blind. Hmm.

Edit
OH! Mighty Mighty Bosstones, anyone?

lilikoi's avatar

Sublime! second that! – I LOVE THEM. Second Bush (although weren’t they more 80s?).

Alanis Morissette, Hootie & The Blowfish, Boys 2 Men, Reel Big Fish, Save Ferris

squidcake's avatar

Awesome responses, guys. So many memories…
Have to say, though…not a huge fan of Counting Crows or Goo Goo Dolls.
But I love me some Sublime & Hootie.

OperativeQ's avatar

People hate 90’s music??? That’s the first I’m hearing of that.

It’s too hard to pick out one band from the 90’s. Simply impossible.

squidcake's avatar

@OperativeQ
Oh yeah. People call it the era of soulless music because of chart-toppers like Britney Spears and N’Sync…which I also listen to shamlessly.

lilikoi's avatar

@squidcake If the 90’s was the era of soulless music, what are they calling the 2000s?! I think it has gone way down hill.

free_fallin's avatar

The 90s were great. Radiohead and Pearl Jam are probably my two favorites.

squidcake's avatar

@lilikoi I agree.
Maybe people just didn’t think the 90’s were great in comparison with the 80’s (but I tend to like 90’s music more…with the exception of The Smiths and Joy Division.)

aprilsimnel's avatar

Soul Coughing, Radiohead, and Nirvana were my fave bands of that decade.

tinyfaery's avatar

Smashing Pumpkins
Janes Addiction

tinyfaery's avatar

Maybe Jane’s was more 80’s.

squidcake's avatar

Can’t believe no one else mentioned these guys… yet.

DeanV's avatar

I’d go with Blur or Pavement on this one. Or maybe Radiohead. Or Sublime. Or maybe some Cursive. Damn, this is difficult.

Jude's avatar

I have to agree with Blur, Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins and Pearl Jam.

Toss in Super Grass, Garbage and Pixies (Frank Black FF to :32).

squidcake's avatar

@jjmah

Ooh, lurve for Garbage and Pixies. <3

aprilsimnel's avatar

I do like Supergrass. Gaz and Danny just played in NYC last month.

Jude's avatar

Alright – Super Grass. I saw these guys in Detroit. They opened for Dave Grohl and the boys.

shpadoinkle_sue's avatar

Social Distortion, They Might Be Giants, Cherry Poppin Daddies, Nirvana, and the Foo Fighters

jonsblond's avatar

Alice In Chains & Jane’s Addiction for sure.

@jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities That was going to be my first answer. My absolute favorite.

@squidcake The 90s are my favorite for music.

James (Laid)

Another favorite – The White Stripes

Jeremycw1's avatar

@lilikoi Reel Big Fish is the best! I like Powerman 5000 90’s stuff, Green Day 90’s, and Eric Clapton

Jude's avatar

Paul Weller

I’m having a hard time picking just one.

Man, those Brits were sexy.

chels's avatar

@Jeremycw1 Mmmm Eric Clapton.

HTDC's avatar

And who can forget The Prodigy.

chels's avatar

Gin Blossoms.

Brian1946's avatar

My favorite artists of the 90’s are Sarah McLachlan, Sheryl Crow, and Joan Osborne.
My favorite bands are Nirvana and Third Eye Blind.

OperativeQ's avatar

@jjmah The White Stripes, while starting in the (late) 90’s wouldn’t be considered a 90’s band (to me at least) since they’re popularity has mostly been in the 00’s.

jonsblond's avatar

How could I forget The Black Crowes. These guys are awesome live.

Hey little thing let me light your candle
‘Cause mama I’m sure hard to handle, now, gets around

DeanV's avatar

Oh, jeez. Forgot Beck.

The Way By Fastball
No Rain by Blind Melon
Barely Breathing by Duncan Sheik
Sex and Candy by Marcy Playground
Breakfast at Tiffany’s by Deep Blue Something
1979 by Smashing Pumpkins

Edit:
Oh shit. I forgot..
Mr. Jones by Counting Crows.

I had to.

Closing time is a great song

I’m a Greenday lover myself, along with Sublime, Collective Soul, Hootie & the Blowfish, Three Doors down and Marilyn Manson.
Tainted Love…Oooh..gotta hear that now. lol

@chels I know every single one of those songs by heart.

chels's avatar

@OperativeQ Soooo good, right?

Jeremycw1's avatar

did ozzy osbourne produce anything in the 90’s?

free_fallin's avatar

@chels GA! perfect list

cockswain's avatar

I’m going with Alice in Chains, Tool, Soundgarden, Jane’s Addiction, NIN, White Zombie, Reverend Horton Heat, Primus, and Marilyn Manson. And I guess I can still count the Rolling Stones.

ubersiren's avatar

Choosing favorite 90s bands is like choosing between children. I’ll have to say, while not a quintessential 90s sound, I have to vote for Ben Folds Five.

Jeremycw1's avatar

@ubersiren I absolutely love ben folds. and ben folds five

LoveNickValensi's avatar

THE STROKES!They are like the greatest frickin band EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

aprilsimnel's avatar

@ubersiren – Aw, Ben Folds is great.

rottenit's avatar

Nine Inch Nails

Cruiser's avatar

I kinda like Collective Soul…they had a cool sound and some heavy riffs that resonated with me.

Jude's avatar

Still love me some Chris Cornell and Sound Garden.

Arisztid's avatar

I would have a hard time with naming my favorite 90’s band because I, really, do not listen to new music. New music is anything past the 80’s. I think Marilyn Manson is from the 90’s and I am fond of some of his stuff. I am, in general, pretty stuck in the 80’s and a question like this about the 80’s would take a feet long list.

There are a few groups that started in the 90’s that I am very fond of. One is Fanfare Ciocarlia , another is Lordi . Both are going strong today.

The only band that really was going in the 90’s (discovered in the late 80’s) that I am extremely fond of is Taraf De Haidouks and they are going strong to this day.

Well you did not specify genre and nationality.

jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities's avatar

@jjmah I honestly prefer Audioslave to Soundgarden. <Puts on helmet and prepares for verbal beatdown>.

OperativeQ's avatar

Audioslave had the benefit of Tom Morello, but other than that, SG wins.

JeffVader's avatar

I’d really struggle to choose between Blur, Nine Inch Nails, & Rocket from the Crypt.
