Do you think people who write with the left hand are much more talented than others?

Asked by Ranimi23 (1917points) April 5th, 2010

I myself write with my left hand but my parents have always expressed their dissatisfaction with the result. They had no choice and at the end surrendered. It’s not something that can now change.

I found out that a lot of famous people on earth are left hand. That’s intersting! Why is that? Tell that to my family :-)

What year are your parents living in? 1312?

I thought we were past the days when we viewed being left-handed as something “evil” and “wrong”.

Please. It’s just something like being blue-eyed or blond-haired.

I don’t think people who are left-handed are more talened (got any evidence to support that?) but I dont think there is anything lesser about them.

dpworkin's avatar

There is no scientific evidence that hemispheric lateralization has implications for intelligence or creativity.

Coloma's avatar

There is no real proof conclusive, but yeah, I’m a lefty and quite creative, verbose, fast thinking, quick witted and overall a little meteor of zip! lol

Lightning's avatar

Hell no. The hand is muscles and bone and cells. Since when has muscles and bone and cells been a deciding factor in creativity?

Ranimi23's avatar

I read the following people are left-handed:

Albert Einstein
Barack Obama
George H.W. Bush
Leonardo da Vinci
Oprah Winfrey
...

Egad. There are many creative left-handed people. There are many creative right-handed people. There are also creative blue-eyed people and creative brown-eyed people. And of course complete duds too.

Trillian's avatar

That’s an interesting spin on it. Maybe because the hemispheres of the brain are said to control the opposite sides, so if you are “right brain” oriented, you may be thought to be more creative versus more logical for “left brain” people. I’d have to see hard data for this.

dpworkin's avatar

@Trillian as I pointed out above, there is none.

MissAusten's avatar

This is just an anecdotal observation, but there are a lot of lefties in my husband’s family. He’s left-handed, so was his grandfather, one of his aunts, one of our children, and a few other more distant relatives. My husband is an artist, and quite a talented one, but none of the other lefties are artists or writers. Our son, while only six, doesn’t show any artistic ability beyond what you’d expect for his age (my husband at age six was already drawing things that blew people away).

Being left-handed is less common than being right-handed, so is more unique. Like green eyes are more unique than brown. However, I’ve never heard of a strong correlation between being left-handed and being extraordinary. Although my husband and son are extraordinary of course!

Exhausted's avatar

I don’t know, but I read somewhere that many of our presidents were left handed, a much larger percentage than that small amout of the population would have normally. Maybe it has something to do with the side of the brain those people use?????

dpworkin's avatar

@Exhausted as I pointed out above there is no evidence that lateralization matters.

mrentropy's avatar

Personally, I’ve never met a “lefty” (that I’m aware of) that didn’t have a certain level of artistic talent.

LeotCol's avatar

I’m left handed, I can conclude that while there is no hard evidence for differences between our intelligence and creativity, there is definite evidence that scissors hurt to use.

Trillian's avatar

@dpworkin I know. I read your answer lovey, I always do. I thought I was adding to the point, and stating that I can at least see where the idea might have come about, erroneous though it may be.

dpworkin's avatar

Oooh, I get the shivers when you call me “lovey”.

erichw1504's avatar

Yes (I am left handed).

In answer to your question: no. Case in point: me.

davidbetterman's avatar

Nah, just because you are a southpaw does not make you more talented than righties…

However, thinking it does may actually help you to become more talented.

erichw1504's avatar

What about the ambidextrous?

dpworkin's avatar

Well, @erichw1504, actually, there is no evidence that hemispheric lateralization plays any part in intelligence or creativity.

erichw1504's avatar

@dpworkin Your words made my brain explode.

toomuchcoffee911's avatar

I think of myself as talented and creative… and I’m RIGHT handed! Gasp!

Any correlation is coincidental between inherent talent their predominant hand.

It is a well know fact* (in Wannabee Filinbeta) that the IQ of of the maladroit has been rising at a rate significantly faster than the rate of increase in the IQ of rightiously handed people.

However, this knowledge has been concealed from the honest people* (honest is listed as an antonym of a left-handed synonym at thesaurus.com) in a sinister effort to take over the top positions in Wannabee Filinbeta.

Due to the diligent work of some duplicitous spies (who happen to be of the ambilevous persuasion), this fact has become a privy secret (well-publicized) of the forthright and upright.

Two new leaders have arisen: Sanctimov and Perfidy. How they arose remains to be seen as the event depicted here, true as they are, have not yet happened.

The truthful and forthright masses have arisen and are pounding on the doors of the university, demanding data! “We shall not believe a word of it, even if we see it,” said Justin, leader of the reliable (motley) crew.

No matter. Dishonesty is king. King? I didn’t know we had a monarchy! All hail King Dishonesty! And thus, justice was done.

Any relative superiority in cognitive capacity of the queer-handed is incidental… of their compact with Lucifer!
Perfidyous ſpawn of the devyll, they be!

The notion that hand preference relates to creativity is probably not empirically supported.

The reasoning people use to support it are anecdotal and frequently based on misunderstandings about the impact of cerebral dominance and the localization of creative functions in the non-dominant hemisphere.

In other words when dominance is opposite to the norm, the localization of such functions is typically still in the non-dominant side of the cortex.

I hope this is helpful.

davidbetterman's avatar

I think it is far more important in terms of talent to note which hand you..well, nevermind…

Scooby's avatar

@davidbetterman

I’m ambidextrous ;-) Lol…...

Scooby's avatar

@Dr_Lawrence

I’d say multi-dextrous going by the photo…. ;-)

Coloma's avatar

Well… we all are multi-dextrous…we even use our mouths and toes to help when the finger space is at critical mass. lol

thriftymaid's avatar

Not more talented, but the talents are often quite different between left and right handed people.

dpworkin's avatar

@thriftymaid Examples? Source? Citations? Studies?

MissAusten's avatar

I am starting to get the impression that @dpworkin is kind of bitter about not being left-handed. ;)

dpworkin's avatar

The correct impression is that there is no credible evidence that it makes any fucking difference whatsoever, unless @thriftymaid has a peer-reviewed study that no one else has ever seen.

MissAusten's avatar

OK, have some of this homemade lemon cake. You can eat with your left hand.

dpworkin's avatar

are there poppy seeds?

Coloma's avatar

Oookay, well…this questions been swated to death! lol

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

@Ranimi23 Yeah, when I think of creative, I think of Bush. Definitely.

MissAusten's avatar

No, no poppy seeds. Lots of sugar and butter though.

No if that was the case why did God tell nuns to hit kids hands with a ruler who wrote left handed?

Left handed people don’t live as long as right handed people is all I know about lefties.

mattbrowne's avatar

Using both hands at the same time can boost your talents, for example years of playing the piano. It’s good for the brain.
