How much does your city/town/area spend on fireworks each year?

Asked by rangerr (15765points) July 4th, 2010

Not talking about ones that people set off in their backyards… but if your area has a big display..

I found out recently that our city had $50,000 worth of fireworks for the big display this year. And despite setting the school on fire, it was a fantastic show. I took about 938 pictures…

What about your area?

Derby in April has a huge fireworks display, one of the biggest, with bridges aglow. and July 4th. So over $200,000 or $250,000.

The Annual Fireworks display here in our town is paid for by the Merchant’s Association, and held in the shopping center, along with a parking lot carnival.

My town spends 15,000, but I live in a small town. I live near Memphis, not sure how much they spend for the downtown fireworks.

I used to live in Delray Beach, and I heard most of the fireworks there are donated, or maybe it is at cost? Supposedly the family who puts on or sells to the NYC fireworks, or something, has a home in Delray Beach. The fireworks there are spectacular! Over the ocean at the beach, music coincides with the fire works, really amazing.

Boston drops about two million on their fireworks display and Boston Pops concert on the Esplinade. It is awesome!

A few years back the broadcast went national so sponsors (such as liberty mutual) pick up some of the tab.

@cprevite That does sound fantastic.

Many expensive big fireworks displays in the capital city, but, in my county there is only one show, a decent event at a nearby park, probably a 50k show, maybe more. Otherwise all fireworks are outlawed in this area due to the extreme wildfire risks at this time of year.

Always scary..I just heard a bunch of firecrackers through the trees over here…the laws don’t stop people, and I always hope my mountain doesn’t catch fire.

@Coloma It is scary. My girlfriend who works for ABC news just posted on her facebook that some man in NY blew off his arm lighting fireworks. Where I live it has not rained for days and everything is so dry. If a firecracker launched directly into the woods begind me I think everythign would be a ablaze. I hate it. Where my mother in law used to live they would light fireworks in the parking area in front of the houses. Right next to cars! Drove me crazy.

I think Macy’s spends it, not NYC. Well, maybe for cops and stuff. ~2–4M?

Our fireworks show costs about 500,000 including cops etc. All of it is corporate sponsorship. No tax dollars. And a great show. Who needs government.

Most people in my town have no appreciation toward fireworks. It’s noisy and can accidentally burn one’s house.
