Why are cats so much more incredibly awesome than dogs?

Asked by crazyivan (4501points) September 10th, 2010

Yeah, that’s right. Take that dog-people. I said it. And before you say “Dogs can do tricks” I’ll have you know both of my cats can sit, lay, beg, shake and high-five on command. What else you got?

I happen to think dogs and cats are both completely awesome.

I’ll admit, your average cat is probably much smarter than your average dog, but I’ll take a pet that poops outdoors over a pet that poops indoors any day.

Cats are just a little bit of the wild, a little bit of the jungle that we allow into our lives. They are hunters, they make their own rules; they are just a bit of the wild, just enough of the wild to find interesting but not so much of the wild that we won’t welcome then into or around our homes.

Cats are cool because they can basically they can basically take care of themselves. Dogs are much more loving though. A dog can’t stand to be without his pack leader whereas a cat would rather be alone. So cats may be cool, but dogs are better pets.

My dog does my taxes.

nailpolishfanatic's avatar

I think it’s because cats don’t bite that much and they are more quite I guess.

jerv's avatar

Cats are more self-sufficient. Dogs are needy and love you because they need stuff. Cats tolerate us because we feed them, but if push comes to shove, they are perfectly able and willing to give us a fuzzy little middle finger; if a cat loves you then it’s because they actually love you.

anartist's avatar

Because if they love you it is not because they need you.

MyNewtBoobs's avatar

@jerv if a cat loves you then it’s because they actually love you. Perfect answer.

A: Because you’re a chick!

First off, dogs protect. Do cats? Um, no. A dog can guard your property. Some may need to be trained for this, but for most, it’s instinctual. They want to protect their family and the one’s they love. They want to keep you safe.

Dogs want nothing more than to please you and make you happy. In my personal experience of having both dogs and cats, dogs are more personable and friendly. They love you unconditionally regardless of what mood you’re in. They’re selfless. A lot of cats only care about themselves and spend the day licking their fur until they cough up hairballs all over the house. Lovely.

Dogs also listen when you call. Ever tried to call a cat and then you most likely end up walking to him anyway? Yeah, that’s what I thought.

You can take a dog to the park or to the beach. For men, dogs help you get the ladies. Ooh la la. Cats don’t. Sorry.

Most cats look the same aside from different fur color. Dogs come in a variation of shapes (wiener dogs are awesome), sizes (I would love to have a Great Dane) and colors. Some have big floppy ears. Some have big bushy tails. There’s variety there.

Its also been proven that dogs will make you healthier. If a child spends time with a dog the first few years of their life, it builds up their immune system and helps prevent something like asthma. Dogs also get you out of the house and walking. They’re better suited to lead you to a more active lifestyle. Its also been proven that dogs can spot oncoming illness. I’ve been having neurological issues and whenever I feel a seizure coming on or during seizure activity, my dog knows it and starts acting differently. We also can’t forget guide dogs for the blind or dogs in law enforcement. Puck yeah!

I personally think you can train a dog easier and faster than a cat. I believe they’re smarter. Ever seen a dog fall into a fish tank? Didn’t think so.

Litter boxes smell.

And Lassie was just a badass bitch.

That is all. Thank you.

MyNewtBoobs's avatar

@Vunessuh My cat comes 90% of the time when I call her. Another 5% of the time she acknowledges that I’m calling her, although doesn’t come. And of the remaining 5%, 3% is when she’s asleep.

It’s been proven that having a pet in general helps your immune system and makes you healthier, not dogs specifically.

Litter boxes may smell, but you have to take your dog outside and pick up it’s poo in a baggy (less so if you live outside the city, but still).

I have seen a Yorkie fall into a toilet, a Maltese/Shitzu mix fall into a sink with the tap on, and a Golden Lab fall into a pool.

Vunessuh's avatar

Yeah, but Lassie is still a badass muthafucka. Ya dig?

Pied_Pfeffer's avatar

@Vunessuh I almost totally agree with you, having grow up with dogs. The only discrepancy is that all Lassie actors were male. It is just a minor detail.

Vunessuh's avatar

Oh man, he looked so great in drag. XD

MyNewtBoobs's avatar

@Vunessuh Yes, Lassie was cool, but Lassie was also a fictional character, and has no basis in reality.

Pied_Pfeffer's avatar

Many men do. Sometimes I’m a bit envious.

Vunessuh's avatar

@papayalily Ah, yes reality. I mean, Garfield was cool and all, but Brian from Family Guy is cooler.

I don’t think cats are any more awesome than dogs. Both cats and dogs are awesome in their own ways. I love both. It’s like comparing apples and oranges, if you happen to like both. Both have their good and bad qualities, but overall they are both so wonderful I am able to overlook most of their shortcomings.

gondwanalon's avatar

Dogs do incredible things like helping people in many ways and save human lives. Sadly they also have a dark side in that they kill people, send hundreds to the E.R. with bite wounds and rip the face off a toddler or two every year.

You must earn the love of a cat and you get there through mutual respect, patience and kindness. It is a very special accomplishment to achieve a loving friendship with a cat.

Pandora's avatar

In general dogs and cats are better than most people. What you see is what you get. There are no deep underlining agendas. All they want is to be fed and loved and taken care of.
As already mentioned. They each have their own little things that make them each lovable and sometime a bit annoying. But both are easy to love.

cockswain's avatar

I’ve heard if you die a dog will lay by your body out of loyalty. A cat will eat you. I don’t know if it’s true, but it wouldn’t surprise me.

Coloma's avatar

Cats are graceful, intelligent, endlessly amusing with their acrobatics and, especially a pair, like my two one year olds, who right now are leaping and wrestling as I type. lol

Cats are dignified, never stupid or sloppy, never cowering or condescending.

They don’t smell, they don’t bark, they don;t lift their leg on every object they come into contact with.

They don’t drool ( well, sometimes when very happy ) they are loving, responsive, can be left alone for a few days.

They don’t kill your other pets, run away, attack strangers and other dogs and cats.

They are quiet, have beautiful eyes, amazing dexterity, and, all in all, are the cats meow!

I LOVE cats!

I have had dogs I have loved too, but, no more dogs, waaay more work and trouble and high maintainance than ANY other animal!

cockswain's avatar

@Coloma The cats in my neighborhood kick the shit out of each other all the time. It sounds awful.

Coloma's avatar

@cockswain

Delinquent cats ey? Well, bring poor puss in for some milk by the fire, make love not war. lol

MyNewtBoobs's avatar

@Coloma @cockswain Except, don’t really give them milk if they aren’t kittens anymore, or they’ll get diarrhea on your floor.

cockswain's avatar

I don’t want the cats to have sex either.

Coloma's avatar

@cockswain

Well man, get out there and stop the caterwauling and sexual promiscuity!

You need a cape and a bucket of tuna fish, the caped cat avenger.

@papayalily

Yes, just being poetic. No poetry in diarrhea. lol

MyNewtBoobs's avatar

@Coloma Ok. I just didn’t know that until the Brawny Man and I were doing some serious clean-up. Which is not ok, unless it’s after a particularly passionate round of fucking.

ucme's avatar

Awesome…...evil fuckers, much more accurate.

Facade's avatar

My cat’s awesome. He fetches and can eat with his paws =)

NaturallyMe's avatar

I’ll tell you why. :)
(but first to clear up a few misconceptions) -

@jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities – cats do poop outside….
@Randy – cats don’t necessarily prefer to be alone all the time, this is a myth. Cats love company and need company. Cats are excellent pets, it all depends on what you’re looking for in a pet. They’re very loving as well. Just because they don’t behave like dogs, doesn’t mean they don’t exhibit the same traits (ie lovingness etc). You just have to know how to read them.
@Vunessuh – Litter boxes smell only when you don’t clean them. Dog poop smells just as bad. Cats do also listen when you call, and those times when they choose not to come running, you’ll always notice they twitch their ear in response to your call. They have a mind of their own and they make use of it. They decide when they want to do what, and don’t obey commands from a leader – you’re on equal footing with a cat (or sometimes lower than them, haha), but there’s no leader/follower relationship. As for cats falling into fish tanks (very rarely of course), dogs are no better when it comes to thinking before crossing a busy road (very regular occurrence).

As for my own reasons….

Dogs eat poop and throw-up and cats don’t. (at least i’ve never seen or heard of one that does).

Cats smell much better than dogs. In fact, they smell lovely.

Cats are far less maintenance – there are never any dominance issues so less training is necessary. They instinctively know how to use a litter box almost from day 1 that you get them, whereas dogs will continue to mess on your floors until they are house trained.

As @Coloma said, you never have to worry about your cats killing your dogs.

Cats purr. Big minus 1 point for the dogs here.

Cats are way cuter than dogs. They’re softer, they have more beautiful eyes and beautiful faces and the cutest soft paws.

Cats are much more graceful than dogs. Dogs will often storm right over anything lying on the floor. Cats will most often tip toe between things so as not to step on anything.

Meows are so much more cute and pleasant and easy on the ears than any sort of high pitched barking.

Cats don’t fart as much as dogs. (at least of all the 15 cats i’ve had in my life so far, i can’t recall more than maybe 2 farts. I’ve had a puppy for 2 month and there have been countless farts. Also my husband’s mother’s dog farts a LOT too.

I know i’m forgetting other stuff here, but anyway. :D

crazyivan's avatar

@NaturallyMe Wow! Some great posts there, but I think you win the argument with the single line “Cats don’t eat poop”.

Now let’s personify this for a second. There are two people and you’re trying to decide which one is more awesome. One eats poop and the other doesn’t. Wouldn’t take you long to figure out, right?

Coloma's avatar

OMG!

@NaturallyMe and @crazyivan

How could I forget THAT huge, HUGE, bonus! lol

The last dog I had about 20 years ago was always in the litter box snacking….aaaaah…I can hardly think about it without feeling sick. lol

Vunessuh's avatar

Poo eating dogs are recycling, real environmentalists. XD
Most only eat their poo if their owners don’t meet their nutritional needs. I’ve owned five dogs and have never in my life witnessed any of them eating dog shit. I have indeed seen it from other dogs, but not mine.

I notice how a lot of people mention that they have to earn a cat’s love and are on the same level, if not inferior to their cat. I’m sorry, but I won’t be a staff member to enable my pet’s lifestyle. I think that’s one of the main reasons why I prefer dogs. I want a companion. Not a boss. Although, I will say, most of the reasons mentioned why people prefer cats over dogs and dogs over cats has a lot to do with these animals owners and how they are treated and trained. It also has a lot to do with environment. Not all cats are one way and not all dogs are one way either.

I’d also like to add that dogs have helped shape history. The argument that Lassie is a fictional character is weak because there are plenty of dogs just like Lassie in today’s reality. There are innumerable dogs of war.
But Superhero Cat ain’t too shabby either.

To be honest, I prefer pigs over dogs or cats. I have two of my own and they’re pretty much the shizzle. Oink! So there. :D

crazyivan's avatar

Figured it would spark a lively debate, but I love both of them. I don’t think there are bad pets, just bad owners.

My notion of true justice: In the afterlife, you are treated exactly the same way you treated your pets.

MyNewtBoobs's avatar

@Vunessuh But I don’t think my cats are my boss; I do think dog owners often see them as the dog’s master.

There are absolutely no dogs, ever, that possessed Lassie’s ability to communicate with humans on that level. Yes, there are helpful dogs. There are no dogs that are that helpful.

Coloma's avatar

I love all animals, but I choose to not have dogs because they are high maintainence and too sloppy & noisy for my tastes.
Not to mention that very few dogs would get along with my geese which would drop dead at the sight of some slobbering, barking, schizo dog. haha

I like Water Buffalos, Elephants and Hippos too, but, don’t want to keep them for some of the same reasons. lol

Cats are packaged just purr-fectly imo.

Vunessuh's avatar

@papayalily I’m baffled at how serious you’re taking this petty debate over dogs and cats. Get over yourself. After my initial response, I was having fun with this, reason being I think we’re both correct because no two dogs and no two cats are the same, but you’ve continued with your uptight attitude in an effort to prove how much righter you are than me. You’re failing, darling. The bottom line is, the way our dogs and cats behave is a direct reflection on how we are as pet owners. There’s nothing more to it than that. Almost everything in this thread is either an opinion or only factual depending on each pet owner. But one thing that is definitely factual, is this:

A dog doesn’t need to possess Lassie’s ability to communicate with humans on that level in order to be that helpful.

When a dog has the ability to not only guide the blind, but indicate changes in elevation, indicate and avoid oncoming traffic, navigate around obstacles, locate objects on command and retrieve dropped objects, that is pretty damn helpful.
They are even carefully conditioned to refuse the “Forward” command under certain circumstances where it would be unsafe to proceed.
There are also hearing dogs and service dogs.
Dogs that can perform helpful tasks via carrying, retrieving, tugging, depositing, bracing, harnessing and not to mention medical assistance tasks.

When wardogs have the ability to not only save lives, often sacrificing their own, but bring an abundance of comfort to the injured and infirm and be used as messengers, guards, mascots and patrol aids, that is pretty damn helpful.

When a law enforcement canine has the ability to not only search and rescue, but track criminals, sniff out illegal materials, search buildings and other tasks that human police officers can’t do as well, that is pretty damn helpful. A dog’s sense of smell is 50 times more sensitive than a human’s. They can sniff out criminals, drugs, weapons and bombs in situations where a human would have to search every inch of the area.

EDIT: There are herding dogs. I’ve never seen a cat herd sheep or cattle. Never seen a cat hunt with its master or fetch up a days worth of mallards in ice cold water. What about Rhodesians ridgebacks and their ability to kill lions so that the livestock and villages are safe from predation?

Dogs and people have been working side by side for thousands of years and there’s a reason for it. Period.

NaturallyMe's avatar

Well, i meant dogs mostly eat cat poop (didn’t know they eat dog poop too). :)

And, i see cats more as companions than i do dogs, dogs are more like children, hehe.

Yes, it totally depends on the personality of the owner, what pets they prefer. Both pets have different traits that appeal to different people. For me, i’ve just got my first dog, and it’s much more maintenance than cats, much more training needed, you have to be so careful how you behave around your dog so as to not teach them the wrong things, especially when it comes to dominancy matters. Cats just don’t have this issue, they’re much more easy going.

For those who want to feel more needed in a human-pet relationship, dogs will probably suit them better. That’s why to me cats feel more like companions, where as dogs are needy, like children, they need much more of your active attention. Cats will mostly be happy just to share the room with you, just to have the company. :)

cockswain's avatar

If someone feels inferior to their cat, they need help.

crazyivan's avatar

I am definitely inferior to my cat. He can lick himself in ways I can only dream of.
