And right now any questions that have askville in them are getting redirected to http://www.fluther.com/askville/ when you do anything after visiting one of those. That is a bug and andrew knows of the problem. Use http://htttp://www.fluther.com and you should be ok.

Thanks andrew. I have the link for the chat, but it says an error just happened. It went all blue on me and threw me out and I can’t go back in. I’ll try clearing cookies and see if that helps.

Did y’all see, the Askville 17 have had their sentence reduced to 2 strikes instead of 3.

I’ve been out of the Askville loop for awhile, Dale; was there some kind of dust-up? God, do I ever not miss the drama

Harp…no one has filled you in on the Askville 17? In a nutshell, a ton of long timers were suspended for a week and had 3 strikes (of 4 it takes for lifetime banishment) pretty much out of the blue for stuff that went on months ago…

1) Layla, 2) Poppet, 3) Goldie, 4) TurboB, 5) avvoodoopriestess, 6) Lin, 7) Mamasu, 8) Marshall, 9) OldHippie, 10) MightyCow, 11) pseudotsuga, 12) galileogirl, 13) Mr_M, 14) Flippy, 15) Avenger Cow, 16) Cat, 17) HankMoody

It seems it was a matter of 2–17 against #1. They were all complaining about her gaming, her threats and harassment, Askville wouldn’t do anything about it, and they all got fed up and pretty much stooped to her level. Askville FINALLY appointed a community manager, started listening to people’s complaints, actively solicited feedback, and THIS was their first action.

Needless to say, not very many are exactly thrilled. Though they did just shave 1 strike off everyone’s sentence.

Harp, most of us don’t mind the suspension as much as the way it was carried out, the fact that they had to go pretty far back to find anything for a lot of us, the fact that the punishment continues after suspension, and the fact that we’re being villified on Askville when we can’t come in to defend ourselves.

Other than that, things are peachy. I’ve missed you.

Don’t worry too much about being villified on Askville, the positive to negative comments about the Askville 16 (we don’t count one particular member) are about 50 to 1. You have all sorts of people arguing, enough so that we got that strike taken off. I don’t expect any more movement, the bottom line with them is they don’t want to take sides and won’t serve as judges of the severity….seems they’re drawing a line in the sand and trying to parse the message that all are treated equally, though clearly if they’d reacted when they should have, the overall punishment wouldn’t have been equally doled out, in fact had they acted, I suspect most offenders wouldn’t have had a reason to offend. You’ve got 3, maybe 4 people who take Askville’s side, the rest of us do a pretty good job of blowing holes in what they have to say.

Dale, I think it’s those 3 or 4 people, who have taken such a strident approach, that bother me. I think we were examples. Nothing more, nothing less. I’m fine with it. I’ve just been surprised by the vehemence with which a few have jumped out and spoken, as loudly, as frequently, and as hypocritically as they can.

My hope is that nobody, on either side of the issue will be disrespectful. For the most part, people are engaging in great conversation about their thoughts. I’m baffled about why a few are getting more and more angry and vocal.

I’ve missed lots of my AV buddies and not missed a few others, but this place has a far less contentious culture, which is more my speed.

There are other differences that required a little adaptation; it’s a generally younger crowd than AV (lots of teens and collegians), which flavors the tone of many of the posts.

The volume of action here is a trickle compared to AV, but pretty high quality (I find that I participate a lot more here because more Q’s pique my interest).

Answers here tend to be short and direct, which was definitely not my AV style; I found that I had to tighten up the prose considerably here.

Last, and best, the competitive spirit that dominates AV is totally absent here. The “lurve” flows like water because nobody really cares who has how many points, no voting on answers, no BAs. We just have these little virtual pats on the back, which makes for a much more collegial atmosphere.

Hi, MitsuNeko. I think we connected yesterday. I suspended myself from Axedville out of protest, and happened to find this place through a DB on one of JBENZ’s questions. It is indeed strange to see so many friends here – and I kinda like the neighborhood. The more I look around, the more there is to like here. The fluther people have been great.

I was away from EVERYThing yesterday – trying to fix my stinkin scanner. pfft :-)

I can’t figure out how to get back to the chat room though.

I’m not officially “former”, but I hadn’t done much at Askville over the past two months. During which things apparently got very, very bad. I don’t know why AV got so boring for me, but it did.

I was never comfortable with the whole product recommendation aspect anyway, and the management was too distant and secretive to suit me!

Well, I am here, but I can’t get into that link up there. I am deeply confused as to where ‘everyone’ is…

lars – the best thing to do is link up to Marrissa’s profile, or mine or anyone elses you know. When you do that you can see who they have fluthered. From there you can fluther friends and then it’s easy peasy to PM (private comment) or what have you. Sign out an din each day and you can check new activity and no worries.

Harp, I missed your question about Mac OS. I don’t own a Mac – I would resemble one of those toon characters who inverts his pockets and moths fly out right now. My sister’s husband and my nephew are Mac owners so I have played around with them some. Mac OS X is built on a Unix core, and about that OS I know a great deal – I was at Bell Labs for 24 years – but configuration, and especially Mac culture are not in my area of expertise. I’ll buy a Mac when I’ve got other things taken care of, like food, clothing, and shelter.
