What serial killer killed the most people?

Asked by daytonamisticrip (4859points) November 1st, 2010

I can’t find it on google and want to know what single serial killer has killed the most people? Mass murders don’t count.

My guess is that Ted Bundy is near the top.

Ted Bundy was my fist guess too after Glenn Beck.

If it isn’t Ted Bundy, it’d probably be the BTK

Wikipedia has a list of murderers by number of victims, which is a good place to start. It cites Luis Garavito as having killed the most (with speculations that the number is likely much higher than reported.)

Bundy’s 35 is still horrifying, anyway.

Killer Clown John Wayne Gacey killed 33.
Don’t know if that is the record

If I’m not mistaken there was a crocodile in Africa with over 400 “murders” attributed to him.

@mama_cakes I’ve never seen the movie… I’ve only heard about him on the radio…

Wasn’t it some Latin American guy from Peru or something ??

I seem to remember reading about a Russian that killed at least 60+ people.

daytonamisticrip's avatar

@weeveeship I would more likely categorize him as a mass murderer. Doesn’t really count. You could make a good debate on him though.

In history the most prolific serial killer is possibly Elizabeth Bathory who is speculated to have nearly as many as 650 kills (everyone is pretty sure that it was at least above 600).

lillycoyote's avatar

@rangerr Wow! Interesting link. The Columbians/South Americans really seem to be whoopin’ everyone else’s ass when it comes to serial killing!

@Winters I read about that women. What a monster and to think that she pretty much got away with it!!! It’s just unbelievable!!

GeorgeGee's avatar

Joseph Stalin. 20 million or so killed.

looks like the Green River Killer is tops in the US. that list makes Juan Corona and the Zodiac (both from near where I live) look like underachievers.

I was going to say Elizabeth Báthory as well, a Hungarian serial killer in the 16th century. However, her numbers are unclear and debated and estimates range anywhere from 80 to over 600 victims.

Could Caligula be considered a serial killer? How many people died at his orders to keep the citizens of Rome appeased?

Ronald McDonald.

Some sources claim that Mao Tse Tung is directly responsible for many as 45 million deaths from starvation during the ‘Great Leap Forward’ and tens of thousands more killed and millions of lives ruined during the ‘Cultural Revolution’. Mao was an evil monster and yet he is still honored in communist China. Even today there is a colossal picture of Mao in Beijing.

lillycoyote's avatar

@judochop Ronald McDonald is a good answer, yes, but I think the tobacco industry probably tops him in in the serial killer category.

there’s a difference between a serial killer and a mass murderer.

GeorgeGee's avatar

There can be, but one could conceivably commit mass murder serially.

GladysMensch's avatar

I’m from Wisconsin. Our serial killers might not get the highest totals, but they get maximum points for style.

poisonedantidote's avatar

I was going to say i thought it was Harold Shipman, but looking at @rangerr ‘s answer, I see he is 4th.

I always thought it was Gary Ridgeway, “The Green River Killer”.
