Best electronic cat door?

Asked by troubleinharlem (7991points) November 6th, 2010

Okay, now that I live in Maryland, y cats aren’t allowed to run around freely outside anymore. I’ve been looking into electronic cat doors (like the ones with microchips and electronic collars and such), and I don’t really know where to start.

Which kind is the best, if you’ve had to deal with them? All the reviews I’ve seen are kind of mixed, so I don’t know what I should look into first.

I’ve always wondered about those…I don’t have any personal experience but from what I read and have been told, they work but sometimes the collars are lost or don’t “register” with the device. I wonder if Consumer Reports has tested them?
PS Your cats are lucky to have such a good human to research for them!

A vet told me once that a cat that is allowed outside has an average life span of 2 years. I don’t let my cats outside.

@desertr0se : I’ve always let my cats outside… in cat years, they’re 72 (in human years they’d be 16-ish)

I had a cat that escaped and was outside one night. I picked up her body the next day and buried her. Some make it, some don’t.
