Is it weird to have dreams about persons we've never seen/met ?

Asked by lilmoonchild (55points) November 19th, 2010

In several dreams of mine, I get to see people that I have never seen or met, people with whom I go to places, I talk to them, and they seem so familiar in dream, I just feel awkward when I wake up, I feel like I have to meet these persons…is it weird ?
I don’t see these people all at once, but every time I dream of a different person, and I have this kind of dreams from a while to a while, I want to know if there may be a psychological explanation to this…

I don’t think it’s unusual, happens to me all the time.

Apparently every person we dream about we have seen at one point or another in our lives even if just for a fleeting moment. We may not remember seeing them but they are stored in the depths of our minds and often come out in our dreams.

I don’t know how true that is, I read it on listverse.com!

@Leanne1986 now that you say it, I’ve heard that, too. I also don’t know how true it is… but I heard the same thing a while back.

@TheOnlyNeffie I guess it makes sense!

@Leanne1986 @TheOnlyNeffie I’ve also heard that, but couldn’t believe it 100% , it seems to me that I’ve never seen them, or else my mind is tricking me, it’s incredible how complicated our mind is.

The people in your dream are familiar because they are all you. Different parts of you. You’re lucky because you don’t have any bad feelings about any of these people (or so it sounds). Other people have really bad dreams where familiar strangers are out to kill them, or something. That’s a sign of a mind at odds with itself.

Are you a calm person? Even-keeled? Your question sounds interested but not hysterical, and your dream indicates a kind of comfort with yourself. Do you think any of these things are accurate?

When I was young, my mom gave me a book called The Education of Oversoul Seven. It was fiction but the premise was that we exist in more than one life at a time. You could be a girl in highschool here, a boy in the California goldrush and an old woman in the Italian renaissance all simultaneously because time doesn’t really exist. All your fractals are managed by one oversoul and sometimes they meet in dreams. Sometimes you dream of people known by one of your ‘alters’.

I’m not saying I believe it (entirely) but it’s comforting sometimes.

@Blueroses Holy Hell! I need to get that book! I have dreams repeatedly about people I’ve not met in real life, children in my home I’ve never given birth to, etc…I know the whole backstory. In my dream, I remember what we did when we were children, why you are related to me. When I wake up I have no friggin idea who these people are. So, roundaboutly (a word?) @lilmoonchild you aren’t weird. And welcome to fluther.

I do Shamanic journey which is a visioning in an altered state bout about by Sonic driving of a drum. On occasion the visions continue in my dream time. Since I do that work to ask for guidance and am of the belief that teachers come to answer the questions and show me tools or skills I may be in need of I tend to equate “strangers” showing up in my dreams as teachers or messengers from the void come to pass on something I need to know about the world around me, others, myself etc. I also am of the belief that “as within so without” and so whatever you are creating in your inner life in your mind manifests in the walking world in some form of fashion. I have dreamt one occasion of teachers or guides who seem to become part of my walking life for a time before moving back out of it.
I would recommend you keep a dream journal and write down what you can remember about these experiences and the information if any that you are told.
There are those who might also believe this to be dreams of a past life memory.

The only thing I think is weird about what you wrote, is that you are worried that it might be weird, and that that might be something negative.

Are you afraid that you are dreaming differently from others? That the way you dream is bad? What are you worried about? Why would it be more normal to only dream about people you know, or know well? Even if that were the case (which it is not), why would that be better?

@wundayatta I liked your answer very mush, I can guaranty you that I’m very calm asking this, and totally comfortable with it, I just want to understand the concept of these dreams and people on here gave me great explanations so far, on the other hand I love my dreams, I love the world my mind creates in them, in fact @Zaku I’m not worried in a point of being afraid of my dreams or not sleeping at all ! I was just wondering, curious, and wanted to know about people that do also dream about strangers…and also I was wondering if I could ever meet these persons, you know guys, I have already had peaces of dreams that came true: when my brother had a car accident and was about to die, I’ve seen myself and him in the car telling him to stop it, then I saw myself out of it, and him crashing the car, and then there was a hospital , lots of people…another dream was about a place that I’ve seen myself in with my friends, and later on I WAS in this place, it’s a class for evening classes, the same remarkable details in it….I can’t tell that I have a power or something , (that would be silly) I just accepted the fact that I have dreams about important facts in my life, because I don’t see this dreams like everyday…I mean I don’t remember all of my dreams…

Direct human memory doesn’t last very long. Sometimes we are mistaken about what we remember. Maybe you do remember a random face that has no association, and that can come to you in a dream.

I know that in my own dreams, I not only see many people vividly whom I am pretty sure I have never actually seen before (and they have rich expressions and personalities which I definitely haven’t been with in real life), but I also see people whom I do know, but then they tend to borrow elements of other people I know, or other characteristics that aren’t from anyone in particular.

I don’t remember ever meeting anyone in my dreams in the real-life future, either.

So, I am sure it’s not necessary for me to meet someone in past or future real life, in order to dream someone.
