Shared dreams?

Asked by trychvz (145points) December 6th, 2010

Is it possible for two people to have the same dream?
A friend of mine told me that a she shared a dream with a guy in one of her classes. Apparently he was describing his dream to her, and it turned out to be almost exactly the same as the dream she had had the previous night. Even details like the color of the sky were consistent. Is this really possible or just some kind of strange coincidence? Has it been documented? What does it mean?

Yes it is!!! I’ve done it before, it’s called Siamese dreams, or Siamese dreaming. You can also have lucid dreams which are really cool—I recommend them. =)

I spent way too much time reading and learning about dreams.

My sister and I have had the same dream, and my parents both swear up and down that they shared a dream years and years ago.

Interesting. Are there any books written on this? Can you suggest some?
Also, I’d be interested in hearing what your “siamese dreams” consisted of, if you’re willing to share.

Definitely. Almost a year ago, a good friend of my best friend, whom I had met a few times, committed suicide. My friend was incredibly distraught and spent a lot of time with my sister and I talking through her grief. Shortly after this friend’s death, all three of us had the exact same dream, within days of each other, wherein my best friend was so sad about her friend’s death that she took her own life as well. We didn’t find this out until I randomly blurted it out one time when we were all together, and they both looked at me like I was crazy and, one at a time, said that they had had that same dream, too. I think it just reflects the stress, trauma and confusion we were all going through, as none of us had experienced the suicide of a close friend or acquaintance before. ….dreams can be pretty freaky

Siamese dreams can be had by thinking of the person(s) you want to share the dream with. The trick is to clear your mind before you fall asleep and have only that person(s) as the single thought in your mind.

Our dream was a Siamese/ lucid dream in which my best friend and another friend of ours talked on the phone that night (this was in high school) and went to bed soon after our conversation. So it made it really easy to think about them before I fell asleep since we had just spoken and I was replaying bits and pieces of the conversation in my head as I was drifting to sleep. The dream was simple, we met up and were in what all of us could only describe as a white room and then asked what we wanted to do. We ended up going to Las Vegas (my best friends favorite place), the beach (our other friends favorite place) and Disneyland (my favorite place). That’s why we classified it as a Siamese/lucid dream. If you can clear your mind and the other person(s) is(are) able to also, then you might get it to work on your first try.

Here is a book that includes information on this topic.

Me and my buddy have had multiple shared dreams. We are actually writing a book about it and we came up with a theory as to why it happens.
