Thoughts on the unfolding events in Korea?

Asked by Raevarin (50points) January 22nd, 2011

What are some of your thoughts on the events going on in North Korea? Do you think WWIII will break out? Or will another Korean war happen all over again?

Something is going to happen. All of the normal pieces of the puzzle are there for North Korea (Crazy leader, glorification of their military, natiolism, etc.) I dunno if it’d be a Third World War, but it’ll be something big. They need to be stopped as it is.

The only real risk or WW3 is if the US decided to do something, and China decides to defend N. Korea. Personally, I think the Chinese leaders are too wise to have any part in it. They will talk and say things, but if push comes to shove, I think we can all expect to see China step back after deciding that N. Korea simply are not worth that much to them.

As for a short war between the north and south Korea, I think that is highly likely.

North Korea has a long history of bombast and BS. I wouldn’t worry too much about either an invasion of South Korea, or an atomic attack of some sort.

Just send Lil Kim a crate full of Chanel sunglasses and some hairspray for his bouffant and we’ll all be okay.

Or alternatively, we could drop planeloads of handguns, American porn, and Adam Sandler DVDs over the North Korean countryside and let things take their natural course.

Either way, I don’t believe we’re on the eve of destruction.

World War 3 will not break out. The only support North Korea has is China, and China is sick of them causing trouble. The only reason they don’t support the full collapse of the North Korean government is because they fear refugees would poor across the border into China from North Korea, and they don’t want to deal with that crisis.

@Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard I wish they would drop that stuff in my back yard, Hell, I could grow a bouffant. Whould DVD’s play over there? Betamax maybe?

@woodcutter, lol… Lil’ Kim is a movie buff. He probably has the only playback equipment in the whole country.

Am I the only one who thinks that @woodcutter would be scary as hell in a bouffant?? : )

@CaptainHarley the bouffant would just add to the scariness already there, Ha! Maybe get the lamb-chops too. thank you…thank you very much.

I think conditions today are very different from what they were in 1948. China and the US both need each other. Far from being n a cold war, our economies are dependent on one another. China doesn’t want a united Kore under the leadership of the South yet. They aren’t yet that trusting of the US and the West, who are South Korea’s allies. But they also don’t want a complete economic collapse in North Korea because that would cause a flood of starving immigrants to cross into China and put enormous stress on their ability to feed their own people in that region, and to maintain order. China will keep the Kims in check. They may tolerate them poking a finger in the eye of the South Koreans from time to time, but I suspect that privately they have told Kim and Kim Jr. that if they start another war with the South and the USA, they will have to fight this one all on their own.

I think an accident is a much more likely cause of a nuclear war. Accidents not only can happen, they wil happen. The Russians mistook a scientific satellite launch for a first strike back in 1993 and only Boris Yeltsin’s common sense (and the fact it happened before he was already tanked up on vodka) kept that from becoming a full-blown nuclear exchange.

apparently the N.Koreans know exactly what they can do and get away with it. So in that sense they are clever in knowing when to say“when”. They have done this so many times. They pretty much knew they could conduct an unprovoked shelling of the South and nothing would happen to them. They have spoken, and this last act will probably hold them for a while…or not.

@woodcutter

I agree, and they are all so convinced that the rest of the world ( with the possible exception of China ) is so evil and dead-set against them that they need to see their “Great Leader” strike against those around them. This mindset has been perpetrated on them since the end of active combat in the Korean War. They truly believe that “Great Leader” is the only thing standing between them and a world that hates them.

Somebody is going to die, but since when is that news?

woodcutter's avatar

@CaptainHarley Yes and what of the general population in the North? With all the efforts the state makes to keep them ignorant of the real world haven’t most of them by now, through one way or another seen how their brothers to the south live? They prosper with a cosmopolitan-ish society and they’re not starving. It stuns me how they still think they got it so good. What they need is a second amendment up there but I suppose that ship left the port decades ago. It sucks to be them.

CaptainHarley's avatar

@woodcutter

Indeed it does “suck” to be them. North Korea is perhaps the most insular, paranoid, ethnocentric and downright racist country in history.

tedd's avatar

@CaptainHarley Yah but if there was a zombie outbreak, they would be TOTALLY ready for it.

Think about that for a while.

….....

@tedd wouldn’t there be a lot of friendly fire incidence if a zombipocylipse exploded there? No wait, the zombies would look fatter duh!
