In this day and age how would you get a doctor to prescribe you paregoric?

You could ask them about it if you actually had a need for it. I’m sure they’d probably want to try other medications first, but if those other medications didn’t work, it would possibly be an option (depending on the situation). The only way to know is to ask.

I managed it once about 35 years ago, by insisting, but I wouldn’t expect any success now. I wanted the paregoric only for its medicinal properties, using it in the same way that my mother used it when I was a child: to soothe sore gums.

Unfortunately, with the incidence of prescription drug abuse, most physicians are extremely cautious about prescribing them.
This is a Schedule III drug, made from opium and comparable in category to common drugs like Vicodin, and the anesthetic drug ketamine.
There are other options for diarrhea control that would be less addictive, and have fewer side effects.

Paragoric! I can remember getting that as a kid! I didn’t even think it existed anymore…...

It was removed from the market about 5 or 6 years ago.
