How much does declawing a cat in your area cost?

Asked by TheLadyEve (185points) March 27th, 2011

I’m looking into declawing my cat, and I’m not sure if the price I got quoted was high or not. What does it cost where you are?

@DrBill Is that a really small town?

This was asked a long time ago and I called a bunch of vets to get a answer.

That was about three years ago in Eugene, Oregon.

Very small, served by a mobile vet

From a little research online, I’ve seen a range of about $100 up to $450. It seems like it varies greatly, and depends also on whether the procedure is done in the traditional way, or with a laser.

Please look into alternatives while you’re contemplating this decision. There’s a procedure called a tendonectomy which clips the tendons in the front paws, making it impossible for the cat to extend its claws. There are also nail caps available, or trimming. Also please consider whether your cat will be outdoors at all – removing the claws makes it more difficult for the cat to defend itself.

In my area, no reputable vet will declaw a cat, so it may wind up costing more money after the initial operation to repair the damage of a botched job. In other areas I have lived, it just cannot be done at any price. Therefore, it is hard to compare costs with people in other areas, and thus impossible to determine whether the estimate you got is high or not.
In other words, you probably won’t get any helpful answers that are relevant to costs in your unknown to us area since it varies widely, even in one location as @Seelix pointed out. For all we know, you may have gottena high quote since it may be illegal where you live.

@jerv No, I live in America

@TheLadyEve That still doesn’t change how prices vary wildly though, so my point still stands. Prices in Seattle are different from those just a few blocks away in a different part of the city, let alone thousands of miles away in Boston, Orlando, Des Moines…

[mod says] Please focus on the financial cost of the procedure, not its pros and cons. Thanks!

The cost of declawing a cat ranges from $100 to $200 depending on your location. It is legal in most jurisdictions in the USA. I have owned and boarded many cats who were declawed and they showed no psychological or physiological damage from the procedure. Any surgery comes with some risk, desexing included and if you look on google you will find botched jobs but considering the number of times it is done, the botched jobs are less than those incurred with human tonsilectomies. Better to have the cat declawed than to get rid of it.
