420: Lame excuse to smoke more pot or meaningful cannabis-culture observance?

Asked by peedub (8708points) April 20th, 2008

Does everyone who smokes marijuana, at least on a semi-regular basis, observe this day?
I inhale here and there but perhaps not enough to make a call on this matter. For the record, I am aware of what 420 is.

i doubt everyone does…but probably the mast majority of “regulars” do

Wow….never even heard of this before (I’ve lead such a sheltered life), but caught up with this -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/420_(cannabis_culture)
.....it’s soo time to go out and hug the trees!

I used to smoke. Personally, I didn’t really care what day it was, if I wanted to smoke, I did, and if I didn’t, I didn’t. And I always made a concious decision not to smoke if it was emotions related. I do think if you’re into the the pot and/or hippie culture, then go for it. They seem to get something out of it. For many others though, it is a lame excuse to smoke.

peedub's avatar

@8light- Thanks, but for me, it will remain ‘just another day’ no matter what. I’m just interested in what others think and if I should refrain from ridiculing my friends (totally in jest) who keep posting bulletins, etc. I guess I am also getting at the idea of today as being about purely “hey mannnnnnn, let’s toke!” or. say, lobbying for the use of something like medical marijuana. Sure those two can and most likely do overlap, but can the mentality of the former potentially hurt the objectives of the latter.

420 is bob marley’s birthday so since he is like a rastafarian legend so in his honor most stoners will get together and smoke a hookah together or just sit in a “hippie” circle and get high together, but even though thats the reason most people rarely go “yea these next 30 joints are in honor of bob marley!” so I would say that it is just a lame reason but most people who actually smoke would just say its a tradition.

8lightminutesaway's avatar

@ peedub. Very good point, I didn’t think of it that way. I do think some people take it too seriously, and too far. I mean, if my friends posted bulletins about it, I’d make fun of them, lol. That doesn’t seem to bother them, since they’re stoners and pacifists to begin with.

eambos's avatar

@pork: Bob Marley’s birthday is February 6th… The only notable person’s birthday on April 20th is Adolf Hitler.

eambos's avatar

Too late to edit, but don’t forget Columbine killings…

xxporkxsodaxx's avatar

@eambos, you got me, i was only listening to what my friends have told me so i guess i was just being stupid, well after doing some research it was just a time after school that a group called the waldos would meet and toke together, so 4:20pm has just been set as a “holiday” during the year among smokers

eambos's avatar

Hehehe, at the time I’m posting this my score is 420 =o

sndfreQ's avatar

IMO the former choice, and the latter is an oxymoron.

judochop's avatar

I used to observe this day for a couple of years in college but I have not even touched a joint in years. Makes me paranoid. I think it is silly, very silly. Infact I have strong distaste for hippies in general and this day seems to be focused on barefooted, stink heads with egos that are larger than an organic weekend market. Patchouli makes me kind of sick as does fat assed jerry Garcia.

peedub's avatar

It’s not so much for me either, I just wanted to know what people thought and not sound like I’m attacking anyone’s lifestyle.
A few years back there was a ‘420’ incident that really pissed me off. I was traveling with some dudes around Europe and one guy was bent on being in Amsterdam for ‘the day.’
We were in southern Spain and he wanted to take a train all the way there rather than go to Morocco. I said no way, what for? He looked at me like I was crazy or like I was passing up some kind of magical opportunity.
I said hell no, and we parted ways.

TheHaight's avatar

yep, just another day to me too. Think it’s more of a “highschool” or…teen thing.

Yet…my boyfriend of course celebrated it today.

TheHaight's avatar

Haaha..I had my share friday night!!!!!...no more for a while.

sndfreQ's avatar

@TheHaight: did you wait until 4:20 am to partake?

toolaura4ya's avatar

The reason we believed that 420 was the observance day for pot was because it was the police code for marijuana possession but I’m unsure if that is actually true or not. I used to think it was a fun day to smoke more than usual but now I agree with everyone else in here that is an immature and lame reason (or excuse even) to smoke more than normal (aka burn double or triple the amount if brain cells LOL)

toolaura4ya's avatar

@judochop I still smoke and I consider myself a hippy but not in the way most distinguish them. I love nature and I love God and I am very opinionated and want peace. BUT I wear shoes mostly all the time, I bathe regularly and I dont care for inscents:)

El_Cadejo's avatar

420 is just like any other day to me. Just more pot smoking. Not that thats a bad thing or anything.

eambos's avatar

@laura: 420 is not the police code for marajuana possesion. A common misconception though.

toolaura4ya's avatar

hmm well than why that date then?

eambos's avatar

Check wikipedia or urban dictionary. Its a fairly long story.

Edit: Wildflower gave the link above ^^^

TheHaight's avatar

@sndfreQ, no. 4:20 a.m. would’ve been saturday, (so you mean 4:20 am, as of sunday?) and 420 is today? I dont know, i think I am confusing myself. hha

No, I smoked before the Kanye West concert friday night and once i saw those drug dogs outside the concert…I said “NO MORE!”...

peedub's avatar

@TH- Confused? Admit it, you are stoned!

TheHaight's avatar

HAHA> to be honest with you, I’m not!!!
I get highhhhh off life. damn that was tacky. anyways, No. I’m sober. my rule: don’t smoke on sundays. I’ve got a 7 am class the next day and am busy all day.

scamp's avatar

It means nothing to me. I didn’t even give it a thought until I read this thread.

Randy's avatar

Pots such a downer. Personally, I don’t touch the stuff anymore because it just makes me sit around and be lazy. It kinda just bums me out. I’ll take a shot with anyone in a heart beat though. =)

peedub's avatar

Haha, me too! Got any tequila?

TheHaight's avatar

alcohol is a Downer (in my opinion). Maybe its just different for everyone, Randy.

peedub's avatar

Maybe I have ADD or opposites disease or some other affliction but I turn into even more of spaz when drinking.

TheHaight's avatar

I just get all quiet and sad when im drunk, and its never been fun to me. At least I know my limits and when I need to stop drinking, so That makes the experience not so bad. Like I’ve said in a lot of threads, when I’m high I relax. But I can relax without any drug. :)

wildflower's avatar

Some alcohol can defo have a downer effect. Personally I find I get full and sleepy from beer, but not from wine or spirits.

TheHaight's avatar

@wildflower, I agree. But i can be a wino at times :)

peedub's avatar

hahaha, I love that word!

wildflower's avatar

Now, if you really want to go crazy, you should try Absinth…..not legal in many countries, Czech Republic is probably the best place to get it…...and that stuff messes up your head!

peedub's avatar

Brought 5 bottles back from Czech. Shit was out of control, although I don’t know if that’s just because this stuff was so high in alc. content. My Swedish friend, the one I mentioned before, went nuts when he saw that I had it. He pestered me to let him drink a bunch of it, just something else to support your Swede/alc. theory.

wildflower's avatar

lol….yea, there’s a lot to support that theory..but seriously, that stuff does some weird shit to your brain…..and the hangover is NOT funny.
For high alc. content without that craziness, Stroh Rum is a good alt. Even the 80% version is very drinkable.

caly420's avatar

the origin of 420 is when a group of high school gets way back in the day would getother every afternoon at 4:20pm and smoke…it transgressed to not just the time 4:20 but also 4/20 April 20th….that is what I have alwasy understood it as, not a police code, etc

acebamboo77's avatar

i think its a chance to view the cannabis culture and its not lifestyle, but energy.
I was on parliament hill in Ottawa ontario for 420 yesterday.. and it was beatufiul.

No, xxporkxsodaxx. Febuary 6th is Bob Marley’s fucking birthday. Retard. Anyhow,
4:20 is an important set of numbers to the true cannabis users as a symbol of culture. It has three meanings behind it, and – not to criticize (It leaves room for learning) but the true members of the ‘sub society’ dubbed ‘stoners’ would recognize the meanings. Time for a lesson in the school of “420”. The three meanings are ..

1) “420” – or “420 friendly” are spoken terms to identify yourself as a member of this culture, and a cannabis consumer – or someone who is “420 friendly” would be a tolerate person or set of persons who would not mind the use of pot around them.

2) Started by a group of friends who called themselves the ‘Waldos’ (Which their members are now up to 50) started the term “420” not as a date, but a time in which they’d meet by a statue on their campus grounds and partake in the act of smoking marijuana. The herb was used as a sign of peace amongst friends, a sign of unity.

3) From that phrase, we use it now as a date and time. April 20th rolls around – we pay homage to this group and their idea. We get together as friends – neighbors and we recognize that we all can be fucking friends. We light the sweet herb as a symbol of peace, unity, socialization. Relaxation amongst friends, with something we like doing.

Ease up Rastamon on the name-calling; btw, Eambos beat you to that correction (Bob Marley’s b-day) above…^^ As for the rest of your explanation, thanks for the info and perspective…it was en-“light”-ening.

Rastamon's avatar

Ah. I read the response this man had submitted and it irritates me when people, not knowing what they are talking about, would go as far as submitting false information to add a sense of security, intelligence-wise? It made him feel like he really knew something.

You’re welcome. Hah, en-“light”-ening. So, how is everyone doing?

No worries.. welcome to Fluther, Rastamon.

I’ve always been against the whole “celebration” day or whatever.. however I’ve always found myself rediculously high on that mid-april day because every damned person is handing you some kind of contraption, (p.s. college).... So a meaningless holiday in which I end up smoking more.

SpTaAiYd's avatar

This is no joke, I smoke weed every day, even more on 420, it is totally a holiday for me and a big biz day for those of us who shlang. After being raided twice I quit the bud shlangin biz but after being in that circle for so long it is a rare occasion that i have nothing to chief on. Thats night and day, at work and everything. As far as 420 am/pm, it’s most likely already in progress so no need to acknowledge.
