Kentucky Derby - 2011. Will you be watching? Any hunches or tips?

Asked by Blueroses (18256points) May 3rd, 2011

Nothing says “It’s finally Spring!” like the sound of the fanfare at Churchill Downs.

Do you enjoy the Triple Crown races? How do you choose which horses to back? By pedigree? By trainer? By recent performance?

I don’t know much about this year’s possible contenders. The only thing I know for sure is I’ll be putting a few dollars on any horse ridden by Calvin Borel. That jockey has Derby magic!

Well, you will have trouble then, because Calvin Borel is not riding in the Derby. The top four contenders are: Uncle Mo, Dialed In, Mucho Macho and Toby’s Corner, but it is considered almost anyone’s race this year.

Is that a new update @marinelife? I had just read that Borel was set to ride Twice the Appeal. as of 18 hours ago

Wife and I have betting on the horses for years.

If Pat Day is racing, always put a couple of bucks on him. If he is riding a capable horse, bet more. I have known Pat Day to hold back a horse or two in his career.

Put some money on a grey horse. Don’t ask why, I do not know, but it has happened more times than not, to be a winner.

Taking a whiz just before the race…......this sounds ridiculous, but I know this from experience that a horse that takes a dunk just before the race, will be in the money somewhere.

@john65pennington Are you my father? That’s exactly how he makes his picks. A grey or the horse with the empty bladder. I don’t usually make my money choice until I see them parade. I have had luck with the restless horses who act up and bite their ponies. I like to pretend I make logical judgements, but it’s horses. Anything can happen.

@Blueroses I bow to your more recent knowledge:

“It’s been an unusual lead-up to the Kentucky Derby, but nothing has been odder than the way Calvin Borel became the forgotten jockey. You would think that by winning three of the last four Derbies you could write your own ticket, pick any horse you want. But just a few days ago Borel was without a mount and had to settle for Twice the Appeal, one of the lesser-regarded horses in the field. ”

Ah. Thank you for that link @marinelife. I had been confused at not seeing Borel on any of the top contender lists. That article explains it. I like the idea of him on a longshot anyway. He sure made the race exciting with Mine That Bird!

Borel’s mount drew post position 5 which looks good for grabbing the rail. I just read Baffert saying he’s having his wife put $500 on Twice The Appeal, just in case.
