All possible combinations for the first 4 letters of the alphabet?

Asked by NostalgicChills (2774) May 9th, 2011

I found this “diary” from when I was 6 years old, and it was one of those that you have to enter a code to open it. I don’t want to break it open, but I don’t remember the code.
It has four buttons with the first four letters of the alphabet, A,B,C and D.
What are all possible combinations using all four letters?

If you have to use all and only four letters, and no letter can repeated, then it seems there are 24 possible combinations.

Depends. If you can’t repeat letters, then @ragingloli is right and it is 4! (24 combinations). 4×3 x 2×1.

If you can repeat letters, then it’s 4×4 x 4×4 and there are 256 combinations. :P

256 combinations?!
Forget that! I might as well just break it open xD

Thanks everyone!

With 256 combinations, assuming it takes you 10 seconds to input the combintation, then you should be able to break the code in about 45 minutes.

Let us know how it goes!

maybe ask some 6 year olds this question, because they will think of ones that seem obvious, maybe you’ll get a hit.

You should at least try the most obvious one.

So did you find the combination or not?

I couldn’t find the code, so I pried it open with a hammer, only to find one page I wrote. ,

LOL Bad grammar much?! I can’t believe I forced it open just for that. xDD Thanks everyone!

@NostalgicChills; The grammar is just fine. Your spelling is not so great, but, hey, you were six. And from my point of of view, you were a fine writer.

@gailcalled:
I was actually eleven when I wrote that, I didn’t use the diary until 2007 xD
Which is weird considering I was actually very smart for my age.
