Can a normal HDMI cable be plugged directly into a Wii?

Asked by g33s0n6656 (98points) April 24th, 2008 from iPhone

I have a Wii coming in the mail and would like a better picture than what the standard Wii a/v cable can offer. If I can save money just using a hdmi cable I already have instead of spending money on a real component video cable for Wii that would be great.

To answer your question directly: No – The back of a Wii has its own proprietary connection so a basic HDMI cable will not work.

Good news is that you can buy a Wii Component cable which is cheaper!
your best bet is to buy this cable:
http://store.nintendo.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?productId=117711&currency=USD&catalogId=10001&tranId=0&lastAction=setCurr&storeId=10001&languageId=-1&categoryId=62707&ddkey=http:SetCurrencyPreference

You can also find the Wii Component cable at your local electronics store, (BestBuy, CCity, etc.) that will enable you to play the Wii in 480p/1080i and get the HD experience.

And as far as quality of picture goes, the answer is Yes the Wii component cable will show a significant difference in quality over its analog RCA counterpart.

Hope this helps, Peg

hahahaha… no. the Wii can’t output anything better than 480p, so there is no point to buying an expensive HDMI cable. If you’re looking for HD gaming, two weeks ago i would’ve said go with the 360, but now that blu-ray is the clear winner i’d get a ps3.
