Has anyone ever tasted 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay?

Asked by josie (30934points) July 4th, 2011

I recently rented and watched “Bottle Shock” about the the 1976 Paris wine tasting in which a Napa wine won and changed the wine market dramatically.
The wine was Chateau Montelena Chardonnay 1973.
I was too young to be in on the original story. But I like wine.
I thought the story was pretty cool.
So I was wondering if anybody ever actually tasted the wine?
How was it?

Not the 73, but a lot of the late 70s/early 80s. While I was mostly a Cabernet or Zinfadel drinker, I had a roommate who had a Chateau Montelena Chardonnay 2 or 3 times per week, he bought it by the case.

It was always a great bottle of wine, with lots of oak and very aromatic.

Jeez…two of my favorite guys talking wine…come on out to my zone! ;-D
No, I have not sampled the 73, but, I parrot @zenvelo with the late 70’s / 60’s varietals.

You guys need to come visit Coloma, I live in the heart of wine country, but tonight I am a traitor, drinking Pacifico in my ice cold hot tub. lol

I traded some California wines at an obscure little winery outside of Taos N.M. a few years ago.
My Toscano Orange Muscat and my Gold Hill champagne for their “Black Beauty” a high desert Cab with a chocolate after taste. OMG! I brought cases of that home.

Oh man, now you’ve got me curious. That’s the kind of thing I would really love to have been around for. Anyway, even if any of that 1973 vintage is still around, it must taste drastically different now. I was born in 1987 so there’s no way for someone like me to try that wine at that time. The message I take from that movie is that France isn’t the only word in winemaking. California is a huge deal now, but there are many climates around the world that are suited to making wine. There are great wines from places as far flung as New Zealand, Chile, New York State, and Hungary.
