Was the "panty bomber"...(ahem)...injured?

Asked by josie (30934points) July 6th, 2011

I saw a piece on the news tonight, where they discussed terrorists surgically implanting bombs into people who get on airplanes.

They made a reference to Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the infamous “underwear bomber”.

It crossed my mind that I never heard if he was injured by the misfire in his pants.

If he was, I am sure it was not pretty. Probably enough to make me wince. Not that he didn’t deserve it, but seriously…

But does anybody know exactly what physically happened to the guy?

From what I heard on a documentary, he had serious burns to his groin, and suposedly did not seem to care about any pain.

He was burned:

“Prosecutors released several photos to Abdulmutallab on June 1, including five depicting severe burns to his genitalia and thighs, which he sustained after he allegedly tried to blow up a Detroit-bound airliner on Christmas Day 2009 using explosives hidden in his underwear.
