How to use seaweed in cooking?

Asked by AshlynM (10684points) July 15th, 2011

I’ve never used seaweed before so I’m brand new at this. I got it at an Asian market and the directions on the package are vague. It only shows how to roll the food up in the seaweed.

How do I prepare the seaweed before consuming? I’ve heard you soak it first then cook it for a few minutes. Do you boil the seaweed in water or cook it in a pan on the stove?

You mean Nori? No cooking necessary as it usually comes pre-toasted, when your roll it wet it slightly (with a paint brush) and voilĂ . You can snack on plain old nori if you’d like too.

That does sound like Nori, and @everephebe you don’t cook that kind. If you want to cook with it and include it in things like rice dishes or miso soup you probably want wakame . I looked around for some recipes that feature it, and this one looks pretty tasty.
