TV Media: Who is YOUR most trusted name in news?

Asked by smilingheart1 (6439points) August 9th, 2011

Do you feel any one of the major U.S. networks or BBC world news have an open scope on what they can report and how they can state the unfolding dramas?

All news is biased. They would not sell if they told the whole truth and nothing but the truth so help them God.

I would never trust or rely on one single source for all my news or accept news from one single source as the gospel truth. Each source has it own slant, sometimes it’s own bias and it’s always best, in my opinion, to gather information from a number of sources. You have a better chance of arriving at something that approximates the truth that way, I think. Though, certainly, some sources are more reliable than others.

Diane Sawyer.

I don’t really watch news anymore. It’s hard to take seriously. I scope out articles online instead.

Jon Stewart. He needs to understand the news to make fun of it, and he is very adept at pointing out the hypocrisy going on.

Rachel Maddow. She is very left to my center, but she is genuinely more interested in the political manuvering than in her agenda.

BBC, though I don’t consider them unbiased or perfect at all, just better than the rest. So they’re the ones I distrust the least. Usually it’s comparing a few different news sources, many of them more obviously biased (but often witty, comedic, and poignant with that bias).

Jon Stewart.

I usually start the morning with HLN, which is the Reader’s Digest of television news but I like Robin Meade. From those news bites, I get an idea what I want to know more about and I hit various internet sources for those. The only other TV news I watch regularly is The Daily Show.

Jon Stewart wouldn’t be my most trusted name in news for giving a factual, unbiased account, but he would be for cutting through the bullshit commentary.

Of course Fox! ( Naaah, NPR actually ) : )

NPR is also good true.^

NOBODY tells it like it is like Earl Camembert!

Jon Stewart. It’s crazy that a comedian is trusted more than the “reporters.”

Ron Burgundy

Joe Scarborough is the man! You really can’t trust the money controlled networks but there are soldiers like Joe who still have enough clout to be able to tell it like it is despite network agendas.

I like to hunt and peck through The Daily Beast.

I agree with @Cruiser. I also like Shepard Smith. He’s not afraid to call bullshit on anyone.

Jim Lehrer

@Megan64 Yeah, but he’s no longer on The NewHour. I mean, don’t get me wrong, it doesn’t feel the same without him, but still…

@mazingerz88 Literally was just watching this movie ^.^

I am gross and perverted
I’m obsessed and deranged
I have existed for years but very little has changed
I’m the tool of the government and industry too
For I am destined to rule and regulate you
I may be vile and pernicious but you can’t look away
I make you think I’m delicious with the stuff that I say
I’m the best that you can get
Have you guessed me yet
I’m the slime oozing out from your T.V. set
You will obey me while I lead you
With the garbage that I feed you
Until the day that I don’t need you
Don’t go for help no one will heed you
Your mind is totally controlled
And has been stuffed into my mold
And you will do as you are told
Until the rights to you are sold

(“I Am The Slime” by Frank Zappa)

In other words, I trust no one!!!

Several on this thread have mentioned Jon Stewart. I would be interested in why you like him so much. Not trying to open a discussion on him. Just interested in the what those who like him see in him.

plethora's avatar

Agree with @Cruiser and @jonsblond Both Scarborough and Shepard Smith are favorites.

Aethelflaed's avatar

@plethora Well, so, tell me what I’m starting with. How much have you seen of him, what did you like, what didn’t you like, etc?

plethora's avatar

@Aethelflaed I’ve seen him since the early days of his show and tune in from time to time. Honestly, I don’t like anything about him, the way he looks, the way he sounds, or what he says, or the way he says it. I don’t think it’s just content. I like Keith Olbermann, although I disagree with most everything he says. Jon Stewart seems to have the opposite effect on me.

It may just be a personal issue with me. That why I’m asking.

Aethelflaed's avatar

@plethora Yeah, that sounds like it’s a personal issue. I agree with Rachel Maddow often, but the act of watching her is painful because of her delivery technique.
